Investing in education for IPs

EDUCATION is a great leveler. The country badly needs skilled human resources to prop up the growing economy and make it sustainable. This is why access to education for all is a priority of the government, including improvement of the quality of education in all its levels.

An education project is in the pipeline for the Indigenous Peoples in the city, which will provide assistance to students in the tertiary level. The Datu Bago Awardees Organization, Inc., National Commission in Indigenous Peoples and the Republic of San Marino, recently signed an agreement to support this project.

The Republic of San Marino may only have the same population as our Paquibato district, but it is one of the wealthiest countries in the world based on GDP per capita. Its economy relies heavily on finance, industry and tourism. It has a very low unemployment rate, no national debt and enjoys a budget surplus. It shares borders with Italy.

It is one of the oldest state in Europe, with its constitution enacted in 1600, and to this day remains the world’s oldest constitution still in use.

San Marino will give free micro-insurance to each IP college student and their respective nuclear family who will be approved by the NCIP, and a short financial management lecture to introduce to the indigenous peoples the purpose of the insurance and how to claim it

The NCIP will conduct the screening and selection process. The screened-in list will be the basis of the selection of scholarship grants by different schools , with the coordination of the DBAOI. It will also provide 10,000 pesos per semester as educational assistance to the IP scholars.

The DBAOI will provide NCIP with the names of the grantees confirmed by the respective schools and solicit funds from the private sector entities and individuals to augment the grant of the NCIP.

It will also monitor the scholars and to motivate them to value and appreciate education and ensure that they will contine to avail of the benefits of the Tripartite program.
