Interventions are in place for abused girls: Councilor

A lawmaker assured that interventions are in place to help victims of sexual assault in the wake of the PNP report on Davao City topping the list of rape cases in the whole country.

Councilor Mary Joselle Villafuerte, the chair of the committee on health, said that even when President Rodrigo Duterte was still a mayor of Davao City, he already spearheaded the establishment o the Balay Dangupan center.

The center serves a halfway house for girls and women who were victims of abuse. Aside from their clothing and food needs, they also have access to psychosocial therapy to give them a chance at leading normal lives.

The institution was established through the donation of the land by Peter and Henry Wee.

“Balay Dangupan was, and continues to be, the city’s response to the challenges brought about by (abuse) concerns,” said Villafuerte.

“The principal objective of Balay Dangupan is to provide care, protection, and help to the survivors of physical and sexual abuse, children in conflict with the law, neglected and abandoned children, and assist them, as they adapt to society while living in a safe environment,” she added.

Among the services provided in the Balay Dangupan are 24 hours residential care, medical services, psychological services, social services, homelife services, and practical skills development.

A formal education, in partnership with Emilo Ramos National High School and San Isidro Elementary School, is also available. The curriculum is recognized by the Department of Education, which means all their grades will be credited when they enter the mainstream educational system.

There is also a spiritual, self-enhancement and free legal services to its residents.

“We are all concerned whenever there is an increase in this kind of crime but we can now attribute the said increase to a more enlightened population, due to the strong advocacy work of the PNP and our City through the CSSDO and their social workers assigned in the barangays,” Villafuerte said relative to the rise of rape cases.

“Of course through the active Barangay Council for the protection of children in place in 90% of the 182 barangays of our city.
