Huge Bajada fire caused by boy, 5, playing with matches

THE BUREAU of Fire and Protection (BFP) XI yesterday said the cause of fire of around 23 houses beside Redemptorist church on Tuesday was due to a five-year-old boy playing with matches.

Fire Sr. Insp. Brananola, told TIMES that this was confirmed by the account of a witness during the conduct of the follow-up investigation.

“The neighbor saw the child playing with matches and then the calendar and curtains of the house caught fire,” the investigator said. “The witness also saw the boy ran out of the house still holding the box of matches.”

He said the mother of the boy was washing clothes at the time of the incident, while the father was at work.

For now, they are still waiting on the owners of other houses gutted by fire if they want to file a case or not.

“We haven’t received any complaint for now and the investigation is still ongoing,” he added.

A man was also injured during the fire that razed 23 houses in Garcia Heights, Barangay 19-B.

According to the report, the fire started at the house of couple Genalyn and Edmund Legarde. It immediately scattered to the adjacent houses, which were mostly made of light materials.

A man suffered minor bruise and burn at the back of his body, said Chief Insp. Ramil Macarampat, the precinct commander of San Pedro police.

The Bureau of Fire and Protection XI said the fire was put under control around 3:30 p.m. They declared a fire-out 15 minutes later. Damages were estimated to reach P900,000.
