CULTURAL POTPOURRI| Havaianas’ Obrigada goes Orientalia

MT MARTISH Corporation’s annual Obrigada (thank you in Portuguese) gathering for Havaianas’ close friends and the Davao media was held at the Marco Polo Davao’s Lotus Court last February 23, 2015. Surprisingly, Obrigada went Orientalia this time.

“This year’s Obrigada theme is ‘Celebrating the New Year of the Sheep. So, Kung Hei Fat Choi and let us all welcome the Year of the Wood Sheep,” said Marga Montemayor-Nograles who came dressed in a pretty cheongsam with her kids Mateo, Massimo and Nikka in cute matching Chinese outfits as well. Only papa Karlo Bendigo Nograles and mamacita Baby Maceda-Montemayor didn’t wear traditional Chinese clothes that afternoon to complete the family ensemble.

Tisha Ang-Dominguez, Marga’s dear cousin and business partner in running MT Martish Corporation which handles the distribution of Havaianas in the Southeast Mindanao region, was greatly missed this time. This mompreneur, like Marga, is also busy with being a politician’s wife, mother, and businesswoman in Sarangani where her family is now based. Marga and Tisha are credited for bringing the best selling Havaianas flip-flops to Mindanao.

Today, the enterprising Marga and Tisha sell an average of 10,000 Havaianas pairs per month. They supply Havaianas to 10 company-operated stores and authorized retailers in Davao, Samal, GenSan and Tagum. Indeed, the enterprising cousins have gone a long Havaianas way from their first order of a mere 200 pairs in 2005. “We are also celebrating our 10th year in the business this year 2015. We promise you an even more exciting year with a new collection that is sure to delight every fun-loving, fashionable Havaianatico,” Marga told her guests.

Havaianas welcomes the New Year of the Wood Sheep with a “lucky” collection featuring “good fortune colours and its auspicious meanings.” “Top Luck and Slim Peace take inspiration from the Brasilian tradition of dressing up in colours that signify their hopes and aspirations. Green is for good luck while white signifies peace,” Marga, the instant feng shui fashionista, forecasted. Marga also introduced the “Havaianas Slim Provence” in light pink and ice blue colours to welcome the summer season; the “Havaianas Arts” in an explosion of colours made in collaboration with the Brasilian visual artist, Cako Martin; the “Havaianas Chocolate,” which is novel with the flip flops’ soles designed to look like delicious chocolate bars with its wrappings being peeled off; and the “Kids Slim Frozen” with rice pattern soles and jelly straps inspired by the fantasy world of Elsa, Anna and Olaf of Walt Disney’s award-winning movie, Frozen.

That Obrigada afternoon, a brief Havaianas fashion show was held to highlight the Havaianas February/March 2015 collection. Doing their catwalk on the Lotus Court carpeted floor were young mompreneurs namely Maybelle Yu, Chuchay Sison, Dr. Jennifer Christine Lim, and Nikki Gotianse-Tan. Presenting the Havaianas Kids Slim Frozen flip flops was Karlo and Marga’s little darling, Nikka Montemayor Nograles, who was escorted by her energetic brothers, Mateo and Massimo. Oh yes, the Havaianatico kids did enjoy the students of SAKLA performing traditional Chinese dances that afternoon.

The Havaianas collection is available at All Flip-Flops stores in SM City and Abreeza, Chimes Specialty Store, and Martish Stores in Davao and GenSan, Sunlab @Gaisano Mall and YuYu Café (Tagum).

Congratulations, Martish Corporation and Havaianas, on your 10th anniversary.
