Halal tourism expo set

TOURISM industry stakeholders will stage again the Philippine Halal Tourism Expo with about 400 participants in the city this quarter.

Marilou W. Ampuan, president of Universal Islamic Center Foundation (UICF), said they are finalizing the date for the even, whether on April 28-30 or May 5-7.

The UICF is the lead organizer of the annual event, which would be conducted at Abreeza Mall.

“One of the objectives of the expo is to become a venue of promoting halal trade where we can invite local and international players,” Ampuan said.

The country’s Halal products, especially those from Mindanao, will be among those to be showcased in the expo. A business-to-business meeting among local and international buyers will also be held.

Last year, the Philippine Halal Tourism Expo was joined by about 200 participants. There were also investors and exhibitors from other countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.

“We will showcase wide range of Halal products,” Ampuan said.

With Department of Tourism, Ampuan, also the founder of Mindanao Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said there are now Halal-accredited establishments through the department’s project with Crescent Rating.

In the city, she said among those that were accredited include Marco Polo, Waterfront Insular Hotel, El Bajada, Pearl Farm Resort, Park Inn Hotel, Villa Margarita, Sunny Point, Zabadani and Rumah Kari.

The Halal-accreditation is part of DOT’s project in partnership with Halal International Chamber of Commerce and Industries of the Philippines Inc. The department also worked with Crescent Rating.

In its website, Crescent Rating says it is “the globally recognized independent rating and accreditation standard for Muslim-friendly travel services. Our ratings and accreditations are trusted by a growing audience of halal-conscious leisure and business travelers.”

Davao City is among the pilot sites that are being assessed by the accreditation body along with Boracay and other areas in Visayas and Luzon, which are part of the implementation of the project of DOT. (By Kristianne M. Fusilero)
