Gun runner dies in police shootout

AN ALLEGED gun runner who supplied firearms to drug dealers was killed in an alleged shootout with the authorities in a raid conducted inside his house in Ciudad de Esperanza, Barangay Cabantian, Buhangin District at 1:45 p.m. on Monday.

Insp. Catherine dela Rey, spokesperson of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), identified the suspect as Anthony Nino Lagura Sereno, jobless, a resident of Phase 3 in Ciudad de Esperanza.

Joint team from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA-XI), the DCPO’s Investigation and Detection Management Branch (IDMB), Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB-XI) were serving the search warrant issued by Executive Judge Emmanuel Carpio of Regional Trial Court 11 Branch 16 for possible violation of Republic Act 10591, the firearms and ammunition law, against Sereno.

At the house, the suspect tried to throw a hand grenade to the operating team. This prompted the agents to shoot him.

Recovered from the crime scene were .38 caliber revolver, .45 caliber pistol, M26 fragmentation hand grenade, sachet of shabu and drug paraphernalia.

Supt. Joel Consulta, RPSB-XI head, said Sereno was a gun runner who supplied guns to drug dealers in the cities of Davao and Tagum in Davao del Norte. The suspect was also a drug user.
