CULTURAL POTPOURRI|GM Hernandez III and Meg Sta. Ines’ December Wedding

UPON THE turning of each new year, Filipinos are always filled with hope for new and brighter beginnings. You can just imagine how it is for the newly married couple, GM Hernandez III and Meg Sta. Ines, who are starting a new life together as husband and wife. GM and Meg exchanged vows to love each other forever at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Mandaluyong City last December 13, 2014.

Yes, indeed, getting married during the season of good cheer found the handsome and excited couple in a frenzy amidst the chaos that accompany the holiday season. Family and friends thought that Meg was a no-show bride at the last minute. The traffic was just so horrible that the bride was delayed in getting herself to the church on time. Better late than never was what everybody thought as they caught sight of the blushing, stressed-out bride whose heart was beating so fast as she got out of the bridal car. “I had to breathe deeply and had to psyche myself that all is calm, all is bright!” Meg said adding, “I entrusted everything to God’s direction.”

“GM and I didn’t want a traditional wedding which meant nothing too fancy or expensive. Both of us were hands-on with the wedding preparation, even in selecting the suppliers and coming up with the wedding theme,” narrated Meg. The young bride and groom chose the Kate Spade theme explaining, “The style elements of the brand reflect how our relationship and family life have become since we got together. That is fun, quirky, colourful, adventurous, exciting and meaningful. I am a fan of the Kate Spade brand owing to its splendid fabrics, elegant sophistication, and trendy graphics.”

Ever the obsessive-compulsive type, the admirable Meg made their own wedding invitation, giveaways, and even some of the table decors. The stress of having to do all these things surely contributed in keeping Meg’s body beautiful. “I also made paper boutonnieres for the men and paper bouquets for the women in the entourage. The flower girls carried origami flower balls which I made myself. Even the fabric necklaces as gifts for the bridesmaids and flower girls were all painstakingly handmade by me.” How original could you get!

The equally artistic GM did his share in scouting for table decors and fabrics; plus coming up with an interesting music video of his and Meg’s prenuptial pictures shot in Davao by Marlon Advincula. Meg’s brothers helped in painting block letters on fabrics; while GM’s sister, EJ Hernandez, took the time to put together the music play list for the nuptial rites and reception. “I also designed the pretty dresses of the flower girls,” revealed the talented Meg proudly.

The dapper GM was escorted to the altar by his parents, Jose Rafael and Mary Jane Hernandez. The radiant Meg, who looked resplendent in a Vania Romoff wedding gown, was handed over to the stylish groom by her widower step dad, Timothy Dacanay, and her precious daughter cum junior bridesmaid, Tatiana Francesca Sta. Ines.

The reception followed at the function hall of Aruga by Rockwell Hotel with a sit-down dinner catered by Angelica’s Catering. “Our beautiful wedding cake was impressively made by GM’s god-sister, the award-winning and celebrity pastry chef, Pinky Juban of Shortcrusts. The wedding cake was a gift to us by GM’s ninang Evelyn,” revealed Meg.

“The wedding reception, which was emceed by Wacky Masbad and KC Frayco was a lot of “selfies” fun as the 180 guests, who were mostly GM’s relatives and friends, came in colourful plains and prints. Meg changed into an even more attractive John Belandres gown in blush pink colour during the reception. The guests took their turn with the microphone to sing a song or two in jovial celebration.

Meg’s beloved Tatiana had a prepared speech delivered during the reception. She touched everyone’s heart when she emotionally said, “Mom and daddy, thank you for loving me and each other. I hope God will bless our family always; and you will always stay in love. I wish I will have a baby brother soon.”

On the other hand, ninong Art Boncato, who witnessed GM and Meg’s relationship grow right from the start, congratulated the groom for finding the treasured Meg in Davao City. Art congratulated the newly wed couple for finally tying the knot. Oh yes, it was three years ago when I immediately bought a Volcom suit to wear for GM and Meg’s wedding when they requested me to be one of their ninongs as well. Unfortunately, after waiting for so long, I was unable to attend their December wedding when it finally pushed through this time. At least I made it to their civil wedding officiated by Judge Jill Jaugan-Lo held here in Davao City

Congratulations GM and Meg Hernandez. I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year 2015! May Pope Francis’ visit make us compassionate people towards each other; and make our country a much better place to live in with better qualified politicians to lead us. So help us, God.
