Gender-neutral CR opens at SP

THE “ALL-GENDER” comfort room at the Sangguniang Panlungsod Building is now open. The comfort room, located at the building’s first floor, was previously used exclusively by persons with disabilities (PWD).

Vice Mayor Bernard Al-ag said they decided to convert the CR to cater to everyone because it was seldom used by PWDs.

However, PWDs are still the priority in the said comfort room.

Al-ag said everybody, not just those identified with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community, can use the all-gender CR.

“It can be used by anybody, not just by the LGBT,” Al-ag said. “It is for everyone… especially if there is a long queue at the female restroom.”

The vice mayor hopes that such act would be beneficial to all the employees and people who are transacting at SP building.

Al-ag said it is time to put up the all-gender comfort room, citing an incident where a transgender woman figured in a heated altercation with another woman who felt ‘uncomfortable’ with her presence.

That incident reached the court, where the accused transgender woman was cleared from entering and using the female rest room inside a shopping mall after a 10-year trial.

However, the accused was convicted and got a P200 fine for calling the complainant, a lady prosecutor, ugly during the heated argument.

According to Al-ag, the all-gender comfort room will be an opportunity for members of the LGBT community not to be discriminated inside the comfort room.

The vice mayor said there were also incident that LGBT members are shooed away from either male or female restrooms.

Al-ag is also urging establishments in the city to have their own gender-neutral facility.
