Freeze: Reggio Marlowe M. Colina Fire Survivor Artist

Among Filipinos, “ber na” is a buzzword used to announce the start of the longest Christmas season in the world. When September comes (the first of the “ber” months), many radio stations and shopping malls begin to play Christmas songs even until the following year’s Feast of the Three Kings or the Feast of the Epiphany.

On social media, singer/songwriter Jose Mari Chan’s face has become a meme to the Pinoy “ber na” idiosyncrasy because of his popular song called. “Christmas in our Hearts.”

Our willingness to play along with this commercially induced early observance of the Christmas season may be due in part to the Pinoy’s love for fiestas. The climax of this longest fiesta in the country happens during the final week of the year when the shopping frenzy is at its peak. Reunions almost always happen during the last week of December.

But in 2017, the last week of December was a sad one for many Davaoeños because of the fire that struck NCCC Mall in Ma-a on December 23. Many SSI BPO/Call Center agents were trapped in the building and died.

Among the few survivors from the mall fire was a call center agent named Reggio Marlowe Mercado Colina of Puan, Davao City. The 24-year old artist has been into digital art since 2011. He took a break from drawing and resumed this year to build up his portfolio. Reggio is focusing to become a famous anime artist like Hyanna Natsu and Ameriya.

Colina’s renewed interest to excel in digital art was a result of his realization that life is short and one must do what one wants. The Dec. 23, 2017 tragedy reminds this artist (a.k.a. Emancipate or Pate) to live better by doing what he does best: ART.
