FREEZE| Milky Way Acoustic Trio

IT’S HARD to ignore good musicians when they break the silence with well-rehearsed songs. It’s easy to feel the chemistry going on among performers who enjoy what they do.

Milky Way (formerly Trioustic Band) is an acoustic trio from the University of Mindanao whose music stretches back to their friendship forged at Davao City National High School. These two-boys-and-a-girl entertainers bring their youthful energy on stage like kids on the loose in a playpen. Even when they are just beginning to scratch the surface of a professional career in live music entertainment, elder performers have already expressed respect for the talents of Eduard Paul L. Mapula, Ethel Angela S. Hernandez, and Albert Von D. Daligdigan.

Eduard was born on May 16, 1995, and lives in Spring Valley, Buhangin. He is a second year college student at the University of Mindanao, Education Major in MAPEH. He was seven years old when he heard the song Got To Believe on the radio and gave him a Last Song Syndrome (LSS) case. He sang it loud in his room and his pipes blew away his surprised mom with delight. The kid got priceless appreciation and later a compact disc copy of Got To Believe from his first fan. Eduard gives credit to his mother for nurturing his musical skills.

Ethel was born on March 8, 1998, and lives in Isidro Village, Bankerohan. She is a working student (Student Training Assistance Program) at the University of Mindanao – on her third year in Social Work school. While dancing was her childhood passion, singing grew on her when she reached high school because of peers who were into singing contests. She had a short stint with a guitarist performing in a bar but going home late at night from a gig proved to be unfit for a third year high school student. In the summer of 2017, with Eduard’s prodding. Ethel decided to go pro.

Albert was born on June 26, 1996, and lives in Buhangin. This second year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Mindanao used to be a Customer Service Representative at Six Eleven Global (BPO) and a sales demo/cashier at Sports House International, SM Lanang Premier. He got hooked into music at an early age because his cousins from both parents’ sides are musicians. Although no one directly taught him how to play musical instruments, he learned to play guitar and cajon at the age of ten through observation and practice. He got his pipes working when he joined a choir at Col. Saludarez Elementary School in Magdum, Tagum City. This self-taught musician’s skills bloomed even more in high school.

Eduard and Albert first tried to audition in several venues as a duo but received rejections because those places preferred a group with a female singer. Ethel was the answer. The awesome threesome got together and practiced a lot to prove their worth. All of them sing and play musical instruments and it’s not surprising to see them switch roles on stage every now and then.

Angas is a Tagalog slang negatively translated by Google as boastfulness but Urban Dictionary on the Internet has a positive take on it – saying it’s cool, awesome, badass, or anything similar. The positive definition is applicable to Milky Way acoustic trio, a band with angas.

They perform in private functions, Casa de Amigos, WAV Entertainment Central, and other local venues. They have original songs that sound commercially viable and an impresario could help these talented UM students soar.
