Pottery has been a source of livelihood for many Matti residents for generations. Some children even help in painting pots and gathering garden soil for plant seedlings there.

Amiable Ruben Javier is one of those who keep the pottery business alive in Matti. Ruben has developed soft skills to deal with customers and sometimes goes out of his way to give a tour of the traditional pottery factory that is rarely seen by travelers. Their waste material section has been turned into a “rage release” area for those who may de-stress by breaking clay pots for fun.

Also, Mr. Javier enjoys demonstrating the power of the miracle berry (Synsepalum dulcificum), a plant known for its fruit that causes sour foods subsequently consumed to taste sweet. When the fleshy part of the berry is eaten, the miraculin molecule binds to the tongue’s taste buds and causes sour foods to taste sweet. This effect lasts up to about 30 minutes.

People there also sell clay and concrete figurines to add visual treats on gardens.

Educational field trips for curious minds may be arranged with Ruben in Matti.
