Freeze | Mary Joyce Datuin from Bacolod, Lanao del Norte

YOUNGER than millennials, Generation Z artist Mary Joyce C. Datuin was born on Jan. 5, 1998, in Tubod Baroy in Bacolod, Lanao del Norte.

Not to be confused with the city of Bacolod in the Visayas, the municipality of Bacolod in Lanao del Norte was originally populated by mostly Maranao people. In the Maranao language, Bacolod means wide shore. Bacolod was once a mere barrio of the municipality of Kolambugan, the oldest town in the province of Lanao del Norte (-Wikipedia).

GEN Z’er Mary Datuin takes art seriously

Mary’s mother is from Davao City. Miss Datuin is a third year B.S. Civil Engineering student who lives with her father. Armed with graphite and ballpoint pens, this pretty lass feels grateful to have learned how to draw because the money she earns from drawing helps defray expenses in school. She may be out of school today but she’s saving up to finish her studies.

“Guhit Pinas (Facebook group of artists) helped me improve my skills. Drawing allowed me reach third year in Civil Engineering and I thank those who believe in my talent and, above all, I thank God,” declared the lady from Bacolod.

Mary Joyce Cabusas Datuin is just one of the many artists featured in Mindanao Times who face life’s challenges with a pencil and ballpoint pen.
