2 killed, 9 hurt when bus hits pickup truck

TWO persons were killed while nine other family members, including a one-year-old girl, were wounded when the pickup truck they rode was hit by a passenger bus along the Diversion Road of Digos City, Davao del Sur at 1:15 a.m. yesterday.

Chief Insp. Milgrace Driz, the spokesperson of Police Regional Office (PRO) XI, identified the fatalities as Leo Compacion Onting, the driver of the ill-fated Ford Ranger pickup vehicle, and Madeline Onting, 36. The driver reportedly died on the spot while Madeline died at the hospital.

Those who sustained injuries were identified as Elma Compacion, 42; Rosel Compacion, 40; Angely Compacion, 20; Nicole Compacion, 17; KC Compacion, 13; Madel Onting, 8; Gabriel Compacion, 6; and the one-year-old Sofia Onting.

Authorities are now preparing a case against Jessie Mag Usara Sedoriosa, the driver of the King Long bus.

The incident happened at the intersection of the Davao-Cotabato Road and the Digos-Diversion Road in Barangay Cogon near a Shell gasoline station.

According to the initial investigation, the pickup truck was travelling along Davao-Cotabato Road coming from Kapatagan heading towards Davao City. The King Long bus, travelling along the same road on the opposite direction, was going to the Digos-Diversion Road.

Upon reaching the center of the road, the bus allegedly hit accidentally the left side portion of the pickup truck.

The impact resulted to the death of the pickup truck driver and the injuries of the 10 passengers.

The wounded passengers were immediately brought to Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital for medical attention. Madeline later expired at the hospital.
