FAMILY MATTERS| World peace begins at home

WHY DO many people feel that this world seems ready to burst on its sides? It is like a vehicle full of passengers running at full speed without a driver. Sometimes, it is better not to read the papers or listen to news on TV because hardly can anyone find anything to lift up the people’s spirits. You go to social media and most likely, they are nosy and not worthy as news consumption. Who are telling the truth and who are spreading lies? This is becoming an insane world. Sometimes, some well-meaning people join the bandwagon of whichever side they want to shout about. Everybody seems offended. This writer laughed upon encountering a quote from an anonymous writer:

“Just because you are offended doesn’t mean you are right.”

And because many are offended, their natural tendency is to offend as well. Obviously, they are not offering better solutions to this troubled world. I don’t mean to be talking absolute and hopeless. Surely, there are still many who are hoping, praying, finding substantial means to somehow alleviate our situation. They are the people who are attacking the real problem and not personalities. The same way that when we see a problem, instead of attacking the devil or resist him who causes the problem and used the person, it is more convenient to attack the person.

Surely, if we seek then we shall find if we try harder. If people resort to prayer to find answers to their fears, then, it follows that they believe there is God. God Himself promised :

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

II Chronicles 7:14

To be humble means having a modest view of one’s self. This is keeping away from limelight when the intention to help is sincere. It is a gesture of making God the only audience for every act of kindness. An admonition to turn from wicked ways is a requirement for God to move His hands and improve the situation. If that is so, then from His Throne, He sees the repentant hearts and He promises to forgive. Upon forgiving, He promises to heal the land. It is only a sick land or a world that needs healing. This is a great promise that guarantees a powerful answer when we abide. It is so easy for God to snap His fingers and voila, everything comes to order. But He prefers not to work that way. He wants the participation of His people for every good deed that He wants to see happen in this world.

Because He is a God of order, it is good to begin the work from the most basic unit of society, the family. Begin the most sincere act of kindness and love to every member, and like a ripple of water, let it spread all around and healing begins as we watch world peace happens. Mother Theresa who knew the troubles of poverty and chaos really made sense when she said,

” What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.”
