EDITORIAL| Creating a nurturing environment for all

THE VISION stated by Mayor Sara Duterte –Carpio in her State of the City Address last Tuesday cuts close to the heart of every Davaoeno:  a nurturing environment that can enable families to provide sufficient food for themselves and their children,  education so that the young can have skills or finish a college degree that will enable them to seek employment or become entrepreneurs , and for each family to live in decent housing.

These, at first glance, may look like simple dreams but these would take great political will from the local government with the collaboration of the private sector to be possible especially in the remaining two years of her term.

The United Nations outline of eradicating hunger and improving human conditions worldwide rests on these same goals as stated in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The first SDG goal is to end poverty by 2030. According to the UN, “poverty is more than the lack of income and resources to ensure a sustainable livelihood. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion as well as the lack of participation in decision-making. Economic growth must be inclusive to provide sustainable jobs and promote equality.”

Creating an environment wherein each Davaoeno will have a fair chance to better his life through education, access to healthcare and social services, job opportunities and political participation, is a challenging task for any administration to take on. Yet, we trust this administration can lay the groundwork for this vision to be a reality.
