Drugs destroyed

P11.6 million worth of illegal drugs burned

CONFISCATED illegal drugs worth around P11.6 million were burned by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) XI yesterday morning in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

A total of 962 grams of shabu, 1,212 grams of marijuana   and 7.5 grams of cocaine were burned at around 9 a.m. at RDR Gym in Mankilam, Tagum City, PDEA XI officer-in-charge Naravy Duquiatan said.

Nephi Noli Dimaandal, PDEA XI spokesperson, said the burning was in observance of Presidential Proclamation No. 124, issued in 2001, which declares the third week of November as Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week.

Among those who witnessed the drug burning were Gov. Antonio Rafael Del Rosario, Judge Sharon Rosesaracin of Regional Trial Court Branch 30, town mayors, representatives from Public Attorney’s Office, Department of Justice, and Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council of Davao del Norte.

The burning of seized illegal drugs was pursuant to Republic Act 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act   of   2002, which provides the PDEA the powers to destroy illegal drugs.

The burning was done to counter public skepticism that seized illegal drugs are being recycled by law enforcement agencies, Dimaandal said.

Aaron Aquino, PDEA director general, commended the effort of the Davao del Norte provincial government, other law enforcement agencies and the community “for their untiring support in the fight against illegal drugs.”
