DILG waiting for new set of brgy captains to elect leader

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) will direct the Liga ng mga Barangay or the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) to elect their new president who will automatically get a seat in the City Council.

“We are now waiting for the DILG to conduct a necessary election for the next officers of the ABC,” said Vice Mayor Bernard Al-ag, adding that “the person who will win in the next election for ABC president, he or she will represent the barangay captains here in the council.”
Councilor January Duterte is the incumbent ABC president, and the representative of the barangays in the City Council. Al-ag clarified that Duterte will remain in her post until the ABC elections.
Meanwhile, Duterte is still the barangay captain of Catalunan Grande as she has no competition for the position last election.
The new set of barangay officials were supposed to be elected on Oct. 31, 2016, but it was postponed to Oct. 23, 2017, by virtue of Republic Act 10923.
Less than a month before the 2017 election, President Rodrigo Duterte signed RA 10952, postponing it to May 2018.
The election of the barangay-based Sangguniang Kabataan has been postponed for several times, as well, since 2013.
The President originally wanted to postpone the village elections for fear that drug lords would fund candidates and eventually control the communities. His critics have pointed out that Duterte just wanted the electoral exercise suspended so his administration’s planned plebiscite on revising the Constitution can continue unhampered.
