ONE OF THE inmates who tried to escape the Davao del Sur provincial jail was killed by chasing jail officers yesterday noon in Digos City.

Sr. Supt. Samuel Gadingan, director of Davao del Sur Police Provincial Office, identified the fatality as Bakotal Pino Tiwan, a 22-year-old resident of Barangay Datu Danwata, Malita, Davao del Sur. He was facing a murder case.

Tiwan’s companion, Meroy Gampong Digan, accused of homicide, a 22-year-old resident of Barangay Kapatagan, Digos City, was wounded.

Gadingan said Tiwan and Digan escaped from the provincial jail in Digos City yesterday noon

The inmates reportedly managed to jump off the fence of the detention facility.

But the duty guards of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) immediately noticed the jailbreak.

A chase ensued.

As the escapees reportedly refused to heed, the responding officers fired their guns.

Tiwan and Digan were hit.

Authorities rushed the two to the hospital. Tiwan died due to the gunshot wounds.

Jail Insp. Edo Lobenia, spokesperson of BJMP XI, said an investigation is now being conducted on the aborted prison escape.

“I don’t want to speculate about the said incident,” Lobenia said, adding that they are still waiting for the reports of their BJMP Provincial Office.
