DCWD to invest P87.5-M to boost Toril water supply

THE DAVAO City Water District (DCWD) will set up a production well in Toril to stabilize the area’s water supply.

Jovana Cresta T. Duhaylungsod, deputy spokesperson of DCWD, said on yesterday’s @ Habi at Kape in Abreeza Mall that the project, which is up for bidding next month, has a budget of P87.5 million.

“This is targeted to be set up soon and be completed next year,” Duhaylungsod said, as the project is needed to serve especially the areas that currently experience low water pressure to zero water supply.

Most of those areas, she said, are in the elevated portion of Toril District incluuing Upper Piedad. She said those suffered low to zero supply of water with the increase of demand, which now reached to 9,000 service connections.

The new production well will tap the water source in Toril.

Apart from Toril, Duhaylungsod said some areas in the second district, such as Cabantian, Indangan and Communal, also experience low water pressure to zero water supply as “those were geographically far from the production wells.”

The supply problem in those areas, she said, will be addressed once there would be the bulk water project of Apo Agua Infrastructura Inc., a joint venture firm of Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV) and JV Angeles Construction Corp.

“It will tap the surface water in Tamugan,” Duhaylungsod said.

Presently, Arturo M. Milan, adviser for Mindanao of AEV, said they are waiting on the approval from Department of Agrarian Reform to grant them the permit to construct the bulk water project.

“We needed to secure a permit from DAR to convert the area (where the project will be set up) from agricultural land to industrial land. We hope that our request will be approved by June so we could start the construction,” Milan said.
