DAVAO REGION Unemployment rate up in January, bares report

UNEMPLOYEMENT rate in Davao Region increased to 5.9% in Jan. compared with the figure a year ago, data from Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) bared.

In the Labor Force Survey (LFS) of PSA, the region’s unemployment rate slightly rose from 5.1% in Jan. last year..

The LFS covered the months Nov. last year up to Jan. this year, which recorded 3.411 million population aged 15 and above and labor participation rate of 61.7% in Davao Region.

The National Economic and Development Authority explained in a statement that the increase in unemployment rate was due to the recent typhoons that affected the agriculture sector, which shed about 882,000 workers or two-thirds of the employment losses throughout the country.

In Mindanao, Caraga had the highest unemployment rate at 8.5% followed by Davao Region at 5.9%, Northern Mindanao at 5.5%, Zamboanga Peninsula at 4.6% and Soccsksargen and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao at 4.3%.

Caraga placed second with the highest unemployment rate throughout the country next to Ilocos Region at 8.7%.

“The government must focus interventions to diversify the sources of income of our workers in the agriculture sector, increase labor participation of women, and address youth unemployment and underutilization,” Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto M. Pernia said in a statement.

The prospects for job generation, Pernia said, “may be enhanced with the long pipeline of infrastructure projects for implementation on a 24/7 work mode basis under the current administration.” (By Kristianne M. Fusilero)
