Davao hosts 19th ASEAN Age Group Chess C’ships

DAVAO City marks a milestone act when it plays host to the 19th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships this June 18 to 28 at the city-renowned Royal Mandaya Hotel Grand Ballroom.“We are happy that this year’s edition of the ASEAN Age Group Chess will be here in Davao City, Philippines. Davao City is blessed with nature’s beauty and bounty, its people are warm easing cultural immersion for its foreign participants. Wishing for a successful event here in Davao,” said ASEAN Chess Academy Founder and President Ignatius Leong in yesterday’s launching at the Hari Hall of the Royal Mandaya Hotel.

Leong came yesterday along with National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-XI Director IA James Infiesto and organizer Arnold Allanigui.

It might be recalled that the Philippines last hosted the ASEAN Age Group Championships last 2010 held in Subic wherein some nine countries allotting 267 entries took part.

This year, some 350 to 500 entries from 13 countries including the Philippines are expected which will have the Under 8 years-old, Under 10 years-old, Under 12 years-old, Under 14 years-old, Under 16 years-old, Under 18 years-old and Under 20 years-old age group divisions. Separate events will also be stage for the Open Boys, Girls, and Seniors.

“Asian national chess federations shall have the right to send as many players as they wish but they are responsible for all their own expenses. What is great for this tournament is that the top three winners per age group will earn a World Federation Rating,” Infiesto said.

Categories to be played are the Standard Chess (each player has 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment), Rapid Chess (each player has 25 minutes) and Blitz Chess (each Player has 5 minutes).

Aside from the tournament, participants of this year’s edition of the ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships will be having a Free Day City Tour set on June 23 and a Social/Cultural Night which will be on June 25.

The Social/Cultural Night will feature our participants not playing chess but will have different art performances.

No less than President Rodrigo R. Duterte, Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte and National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-XI Chairman/President Hon. Prospero A. Pichay Jr. are expected to grace the opening salvo.
