The resolution stated that based on researches made by Prof. Macariu Tiu, Ernesto I. Corcino and Dean Damian Mercader Lomocso, Datu Bago was a hero who fought the invading Spaniards and hindered them from conquering Davao.

Davao was the last unoccupied territory in the Philippines and Datu Bago heroically defended it against the Spaniards. If Philippine history is viewed as our people’s struggle to remain free or become free, like Lapu-lapu of Mactan, Cebu, Datu Bago surely is our local hero.

In 1969, the city under the leadership of the late Mayor Elias B. Lopez, a Bagobo, created the Datu Bago Awards named after Datu Bago, as the highest award to be bestowed on a Dabawenyo who has contributed to the development of the city with exemplary competence and dedication and who best serves as a model of excellence and an inspiration to Dabawenyos.

It quoted former Mayor of Davao City, now President Rodrigo Duterte in a message during the conferment of the Datu Bago Awardees that:

“The city government of Davao remains steadfast in its belief that Datu Bago was an extraordinary Davaoeno who typifies the pioneering spirit in many of us, especially in all our Datu Bago Awardees.

We named the city’s highest distinction in his honor because we only do not pay proper respects to the old warrior; we re-live his heroism each year as we confer awards to our distinguished citizens.”

Since then up to the present, 154 Dabawenyos were honored and this has become an annual event during the Araw ng Dabaw celebration in March.

This proposal, authored by Councilor Pilar Braga, herself a Datu Bago Awardee, and co-sponsored by Councilor Bai Halili Sudagar, will be presented to the city council for approval.
