DA eyes city as site for animal crematorium

THE DEPARTMENT of Agriculture (DA) XI is planning to build an animal crematorium in the city, with the local government here reading through a proposed memorandum of agreement to be signed between the DA and Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

According to the proposed MOA, the DA has identified Davao City as the site of the P1 million animal crematorium.

“The LGU Davao is identified most in need of and qualified to receive or has the technical capability to operate and manage the project,” the MOA said.

The item is currently on committee level at the city council and has been referred to the joint committee on rules and agriculture.

City Planning and Development Officer Ivan Cortez, in a letter forwarded to the city council, said that his office will not object to the construction of the facility.

However, Cortez said that the project should ensure that there are mitigating measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Under the proposed MOA, the DA would prepare the detailed engineering design, program of works, as well as estimates for the project.

The local government, on the other hand, would provide the area with an agreement that would last at least 25 years, with utilities made available to the DA facility.

The item was passed on first reading at Tuesday’s regular session at the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
