Cultural Potpourri | Insulares de Mayo @ Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao

JUST as the month of May was ending, the Waterfront Insular Hotel-Davao staged the Philippine tradition of the pageantry of the Santa Cruzan it named “Insulares de Mayo” last May 31, 2018.  A holy mass was celebrated followed by an afternoon procession of reynas and sagalas dressed in amazing Philippine ternos in various interpretations by Davao’s popular fashion designers led by the  Supremo of Mindanao fashion himself, Alfonso “Boy” Guino-o. The Insulares de Mayo was the only Santa Cruzan held in Davao City this time.  Davao’s fashionistas filled the Waterfront Insular Hotel-Davao’s Grand Agila Ballroom in the evening to have a closer look at the 28-piece collection of Davao’s fashion designers with Mutya ng Davao 2018 Sheila Faye Juntilla (donning a Kenny Ladaga terno) and her court leading Davao’s fashion models on the fashion ramp during the Gala Show.  Davao’s top emcee, Joey Sy-Domingo, was at her element; and was just as fashionably dressed in a well-designed Zen Rhanhiz terno which fitted her so well.  Waterfront Insular Hotel-Davao’s towering General Manager Bryan Yves Sato Lasala looked so respectable and dashing in his barong Tagalog ensemble as he welcomed the guests which included Vice Mayor & Mrs. Bernie Al-ag.

The reynas, all empowered women of Davao, who confidently and gracefully did their catwalk during the fashion show included Reyna Banderada Marian Gamboa in a Dondon Maceren terno; Corazon de Maria Joanna Ang-Gentugaya in Manny Deiparine’s avant garde couture; Reyna Candelaria April Evangelista in a Kenny Ladaga classic; Reyna de las Flores Alvi July Juanico in a Zhaira Rai Deiparine creation; Reyna Emperatriz Eleanor Marcelino in a Federico Navarro terno; and Reyna Elena Twinkle Gamboa in a shimmering terno by Alfonso Guino-o.

After the well-applauded fashion show, the Davao designers led by the Davao Fashion Design Council President Aztec Barba paid a special tribute to Alfonso “Boy” Guino-o.  Tito Boy was described that special night as “a very special artist who has dedicated his life in defining what Davao/Mindanao fashion is; and has always championed and showcased Mindanao’s rich fabrics of life not only in the country but around the world.  Alfonso Guino-o, who has dressed generations of Davaoenos including my mom and sisters, is Davao’s undisputed fashion icon.  Tito Boy has originality, single-mindedness, great courage, supreme self-confidence, dedication and self-discipline which fueled the perfection of his art—Mindanao fashion including its rich tapestry.  GM Bryan Yves Sato Lasala presented Davao’s fashion Supremo with a beautiful bouquet.

The Insulares de Mayo wouldn’t have been possible without the sponsorship of the Waterfront Insular Hotel-Davao, Diagold, Ad and Promo Management, Golden Touch by Noel Tanza, AFDAL Events by Oca Casaysay, and Arnold L. Alvarez’s Stage One Productions.

Thank you, Waterfront Insular Hotel-Davao, for inviting me.
