CULTURAL POTPOURRI| Holiday Gym Superbodies Search 2015: the Teen Edition

IT WAS in August of 2007 when the Holiday Gym and Spa launched its first campaign for Healthy Living. “With the launching of our new campaign then, we turned to our gym patrons to help advertise the Holiday Gym and Spa as Davao City’s premiere health and fitness centre. Thus, the Search for Superbodies 2007 was born,” recalled Ivy Fernandez, the Holiday Gym’s manager, as she welcomed the ever supportive members of the Holiday Gym, the staff, and guests last Thursday, May 28, 2015, to the first ever “Holiday Superbodies Search: the Teen Edition” at the Abreeza Mall’s Entertainment Center. In happy attendance during the event were proprietors Buboy and Gene Bangayan.

This year’s 21 candidates are, according to Ivy, “all special as they are energetic teenagers who are of good physique, actively involved in sports, regularly workout, very willing to practice healthy living and, best of all, ever ready to help the Holiday Gym in promoting fitness and wellness to the general public, especially to the younger generation of Davaoeños.”

“This is a very special event as this is the first time we are holding the Teen Edition of our Search for Superbodies. We are also celebrating Holiday Gym and Spa’s 12th anniversary. As such, we are looking for young role models who embody the mission of the Holiday Gym which is a total commitment to healthy living. I would like to thank the supportive parents for allowing their children to join this Search for a good cause,” Ivy mentioned in her brief welcome message.

As one of the invited judges in the past Superbodies competitions, I still remember an exciting week filled with gorgeous and buffed candidates of varying ages, shapes and sizes undergoing a rigorous audition process including fitness, strength and endurance tests. The determined Holiday Gym rats who join the search know that working out and losing the extra weight would make them look better and make them more attractive to others and that, in turn, leads to their happiness and good health.

The criteria for judging included fitness challenge, interviews, deportment, personally made campaign slogan, appearance/poise/projection, and physique/overall appeal. For the final judging, the top 10 candidates were rated based on their appearance/poise/projection (40%), intelligence/fitness (40%) and X-factor/overall appeal (20%). This year’s chosen judges included events diva Kat Dalisay, fashion queen Juliet Pamintuan, Mutya ng Davao 2015 Abigail Guanzon, event planner/fashion consultant Christopher Ledesma, St. John Paul II College of Davao Director April Evangelista, with Arch. Michael E. Dakudao as Chairman. The show was ably emceed by the well-loved television personality with an emerging dad bod, Dr. Rovic Cuasito, and so fit fashion designer/Superbodies Champ (2014), Stephanie Dacalus, who are both active members of the Holiday Gym.

Receiving special awards were Lavesh Dhanwani and Trishia Dillera (Mr. & Ms. Congeniality); George Russel Y. Bacsarpa and Claudia E. Verga (Mr. & Ms. Photogenic); Melvin Solon and Kimberly B. Haw (Mr. & Ms. Fitness by Nature Spring); and Paolo Miguel Camacho and Claudine E. Verga (Best in Fun Wear by fashion makers Jhon Ryan Ayala and Mark Joseph Sayad).

Making history as winners of the first Holiday Gym’s Superbodies Search: the Teen Edition are Paolo Miguel Camacho, George Russel Y. Bacsarpa, Gilia G. Nolasco and Claudine E. Verga. They each received a cash prize of 10,000 pesos plus a one-year free membership at the Holiday Gym.

“These young people are the role models for healthy and modern living. They are the chosen ones who will help the Holiday Gym in our campaign for Healthy Living from hereon,” Ivy Fernandez stated with a happy smile.

Let us join hands with the Holiday Gym and Spa in supporting its Healthy Living advocacy. Congratulations to all the winners and participants. Thank you, Arnold Alvarez and Jerry Pons, for a smooth-flowing show. Thank you, Teddy Uy, for the materials. And thank you, Holiday Gym Manager Ivy Fernandez, for appointing me as judge for the nth time.
