Councilors back VM in Senate

TWELVE councilors will attend the Senate blue ribbon committee hearing today on the P6.4 billion worth of shabu shipment from China that entered the country in May.

Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre confirmed to TIMES that they will show “support for our leader in the council, Vice Mayor Paolo Dutere.”

Aside from Alejendre, councilors April Dayap, Victorio Advincula, Mary Joselle Villafuerte, Jimmy Dureza, Diosdado Angelo Mahipus, Rene Lopez, Dante Apostol, Maria Belen Acosta, Melchor Quitain Jr., Conrado Baluran and Lea Librado will also be there.

The councilor also said they were invited by the Senator Sonny Angara.

Alejandre also stressed that the expenses and hotel expenses were paid using their personal money.

The vice mayor and lawyer Manases Carpio, husband of Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, were invited in the Senate hearing to shed light on the corruption at the Bureau of Customs (BOC) after they were dragged by self-confessed customs fixer Mark Ruben Taguba.

Taguba on Aug. 31 retracted his initial statement and apologized to the two.

Councilor Nilo Abellera initially faced the Senate blue ribbon committee hearing on Aug. 31 after skipping the inquiry last Aug. 29 and denied the allegations thrown at him.  On Tuesday, Abellera, in a media interview, advised Duterte and Carpio to stay calm and answer the questions truthfully.
