Coordinate road works

Sara wants destruction of completed roads stopped
MAYOR Sara Duterte has ordered to convene various local and national agencies concerned with road diggings.

Mayor Duterte called on the Office of the City Administrator to work on coordinating the agencies such as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC), the Davao City Water District (DCWD), among others.

The mayor disapproved the practice of the repetitive destruction of already completed roads, especially city streets for projects such as drainage pipes, road repairs, curb extensions and rehabilitation, as well as the installation and removal of poles.

“I told the city administrator to sit down with all organizations with road projects,” she said.

The city council is currently drafting an ordinance that would require the coordinated works among agencies regarding road works.

Among the major concerns of the local government is the heavy traffic brought about by the road works.

This, aside from possible safety issues of having open manholes that could endanger pedestrians.  It is also noted that some roads are not properly fixed after the completion of their digging projects.

The executive-legislative agenda of the local government lists the collaborative measure as among its priority measures for civil works and other projects under agencies such as the City Engineer’s Office.

“They need to talk about it as one group,” Mayor Duterte said.

An example of the project is the nearing implementation of the underground cable project, which extends a pilot project initiated by the DLPC after the local government required the measure.

The city council passed an ordinance that could redefine the skyline of the city with the absence of overhead messy wires.

The next phase will begin this year, with the parade routes of celebrations such as the Kadayawan Festival and Araw ng Dabaw events as the next project sites.
