City to receive ASEAN clean tourist city award

THE CITY will be awarded as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Clean Tourist City next year.

Tourism Undersecretary Alma Rita Jimenez said the city would be formally awarded during the ASEAN Tourism Forum at Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai in Thailand on Jan. 26.

This was based on the letter of Undersecretary Jimenez, which was addressed to Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Nov. 24.

“Davao City has been chosen to receive the first Asean Clean Tourist City for compliance with the requirements of Asean Clean Tourist City Standards,” Jimenez said.

The standards include a solid environment management program, cleanliness, waste management, green spaces, health safety, tourism infrastructure and facilities. The standards also include the need to raise awareness on environment protection.

“With this award, we hope to hear more stories of Davao City’s success on the improvement and maintenance of its tourist attractions and contributions to sustainable development,” Jimenez said.

The ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standards will provide the member countries with a tool to improve the quality of tourism in their cities.

“It is also designed to protect the environment thus responding to the impacts of climate change and contributing to the sustainable development of Asean cities,” cited the briefer on Asean Clean Tourist City Standards.
