City asks BFP for list of needed equipment

THE CITY government is willing to assist the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in acquiring more equipment, following criticisms from the public after the deadly NCCC Mall fire.

Mayor Sara Duterte said she has asked the regional BFP to provide a list of needed equipment to improve the capacities of responders.

“I was with them during their mass and I talked to them and I told them that there will be a lot of observations and recommendations because of the experience,” Duterte said.

“So I told them, you collate all your observations, you collate all your recommendations so that the city government can assist you in addressing each specific issue one by one,” the mayor added.

Duterte said BFP XI regional director Sr. Supt. Rico Neil Kwan Tiu has already given his initial recommendations, but she wanted these itemized.

Among the recommendations, the BFP sought for more Rosenbauer firetrucks.

Duterte lauded the performance of the four available Rosenbauer firetrucks deployed from Davao City, Davao del Sur, Tagum City, and Panabo City during the incident.

“In all the responding firetrucks, these four lasted the most,” Duterte said. “These firetrucks provided the most powerful spray and endured the entire time.”

The mayor said the BFP was already hoping for more trucks from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), which the BFP belongs.

In an earlier interview with reporters, Kwan Tiu said it’s the right opportunity to seek for the modernization of the firefighting equipment.

He said there was a need for more modern equipment such as masks, heat resistant protective equipment, as well as breaching tools.
