Chinese company eyeing Davao for banana powder

A CHINESE partner of Federation of Cooperatives in Mindanao (Fedco) has expressed interest to source banana powder from the region.

Fedco chief executive officer Ireneo D. Dalayon told the reporters Wednesday during the Davao Trade Expo at SMX Davao Convention Center that the banana poweder is the main ingredient of noodles that would be developed by its Chinese partner.

This, he said, is expected to come into fruition in two to three years time.

“It would help especially the small banana growers to generate income even on lean months,” he said.

The plan to source banana powder from the region arose after Dalayon recently talked with partners in China.

In the region, some banana growers have begun to process bananas into banana powder as value-adding to prevent from having throaways with the help of national government agencies like Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Labor and Employment.

The DTI XI, for instance, recently provided shared service facilities for banana powder production to Subasta Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Agricultural Cooperative and Progressive Highland Multi-Purpose Cooperative.

The Regional Development Council XI, meanwhile, has passed a resolution requesting the present administration to have Cavendish bananas as a nutrition supplement for children in schools nationwide.

Dalayon said this will be implemented by the local government units, Department of Education and Department of Social Welfare and Development. It would be included in the feeding program for schoolchildren.
