Cenro to hire 70 environmental rangers

THE CITY Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) will hire 70 rangers to help enforce environmental laws.

Cenro head Elisa Madrazo, in an interview, said the plan has the full backing of Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. The city government will start deploying the environmental rangers, who will be given equipment and training by the Central 911, starting August.

Madrazo said the agency also sought help from the Philippine National Police’s Maritime Group and the Philippine Coast Guard to help enforce environmental laws along the city’s coasts.

Under the arrangement, the PCG and other agencies will help collecting waste on beaches.

“We’re looking for personnel who can really police the public regarding proper solid waste disposal,” Madrazo said, adding that they are looking for people who are tough and incorruptible.

Among the policies implemented throughout the city is the prohibition of garbage disposal even in designated areas outside the collection schedule starting 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Violators are fined and given a briefing at the Cenro office at the People’s Park.
