Case vs cop in murder case depends on mental state, say

THE case against a police officer who allegedly killed his common-law wife and her mother will depend on his mental state as investigators were still look at whether he was deranged when he killed the victims early yesterday morning at Kilometer 7, Maa.

Chief Insp. Milgrace C. Driz, spokesperson of Davao City Police Office, said the suspect in the crime, PO3 Dennis C. Hejona, has been made to undergo a thorough psychological examination to determine the state of his mind.

“We will also deepen our investigation to know the motive of the killing,” said Driz, adding that investigators were still waiting for the result of the examination.

“The initial theory was that he was mentally unstable when he shot the victim, but we still need to prove this,” she added.

Driz said investigators were not ruling out the possibility that the suspect was just pretending to be mentally ill to escape the liability of the crime he committed.

Based on the police report, Hejona, 32, of Compostela Valley, surrendered to another cop to confess that he killed the victims. He also gave his service firearm.

Hejona’s colleague then informed the Talomo Police Precinct so he could be detained.

Formerly assigned at the Mobile Patrol Group, Hejona has been temporarily reassigned at the Regional Police and Holding Accounting Unit while undergoing patrol basic course at the Regional Training Center in Mintal.

The report said a man called up the police station after hearing three gun bursts. Investigators eventually found the body of the victims with the mother sustaining two gunshot wounds on the back and her daughter was shot on the forehead and right shoulder.
