PDEA nabs barangay official, husband for drugs, guns

A BARANGAY councilor and her husband, a former militiaman, landed in jail after authorities found illegal drugs and unlicensed firearms during a search inside their house in Laak, Compostela Valley.

Antonio Rivera, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) XI regional director, identified the suspects as Rahima Guiday, a councilwoman of Barangay Concepcion in Laak, and her husband Akmad Guiday, a former member of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu).

Agents of PDEA and other law enforcement agencies were armed with a search warrant when they raided the house of the official in Purok 4, Barangay Concepcion around 6 a.m. Saturday.

Confiscated inside the house were 13 grams of white substance believed to be shabu worth P150,000 and 250 grams of dried marijuana leaves worth P75,000.

Also seized from the couple’s possession were one hand grenade, one .45 caliber pistol, one .20 homemade caliber pistol, and assorted ammunition.

The PDEA was aided during the operation by agents of the Compostela Valley Provincial Drug Enforcement Office, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) XI, Police Provincial Safety Command and the police stations in Laak, New Bataan and Asuncion, all in Compostela Valley.

It was learned that the 48-year-old barangay official was previously arrested in 2011 also for drug pushing in Asuncion, Davao del Norte.

It was not immediately learned what happened to the 2011 case.

Earlier, Rivera said there are three barangay captains and eight barangay councilors in the region who are included in their drug watchlist. However, there was no information if Guiday is one of them.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Army’s 72nd Infantry Battalion, in which the councilwoman’s husband was previously assigned, said the militiaman became inactive as early as 2011.

“Akmad was terminated in September of 2011,” said Lt. Col. Davice Mercado, the 72nd IB commander told TIMES.

The suspects are now held at the detention facility of PDEA XI on this city while documents are being prepared for the filing of charges against them.

In another PDEA operation, a drug supplier was killed while her female companion was wounded in a shootout in Purok 13, San Miguel, Tagum City, Davao del Norte noon of Saturday.

Rivera identified the fatality as Tominaman Kandaw. The wounded suspect was identified as Olikay Magdara Sabdullah. Both were considered as high-value targets.

Confiscated during the operation were around 100 grams of shabu worth P1.2 million and one.380 pistol with five live ammunitions.

The PDEA XI was aided by the drug enforcement offices of the Davao City Police Office and Davao del Norte Provincial Police Office, Sta. Ana Police Precinct, Davao del Norte Police Provincial Office Intelligence Section, 305th Air Intelligence Security Squadron, 101st Division Recon Company and the 1001st Infantry Brigade.
