Bridge, roads damaged by rain

THE CONTINUOUS rains over the weekend affected three infrastructure projects in two provinces of the region on Jan. 1, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) XI reported.

In the advisory of the department, the bad weather condition damaged the approaches of Udiongan Bridge in Barangay Aliwagwag, Cateel, Davao Oriental. As it was impassable, the agency advised motorists to use the Davao-Surigao Coastal Road.

“Initial steps are already being undertaken to ensure the immediate repair of the said bridge,” DPWH XI said.

The agency also reported that there were landslides in Compostela Valley, which affected three roads.

As of 7 pm on Jan. 1, DPWH XI said in its advisory that landslides were reported in Nabunturan-Maragusan Road Katipunan-Cambagang Section and Compostela-Cateel Road specifically in Barangay Panansalan Spur 2 Section and in Barangay Ngan, Sitio Nursery Section.

The department immediately conducted clearing operations on the two roads.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported that there were incessant rains as there was “trough of a low pressure area affecting the eastern section of Mindanao.”

As of yesterday, Pagasa reported that “cloudy skies with light to moderate rain showers and isolated thunderstorms will be experienced over Caraga and Davao Region.” The weather bureau also projected that there was moderate to strong winds in the eastern section of the island.
