Bernardo Carpio NHS upsets DCNH; caps 2017 GET hoop crown

BERNARDO Carpio National High School pulled off a stunning upset over former champion Davao City National High, 95-85, Sunday to crown themselves as this year’s overall winner at the close of the 2017 Guillermo E. Torres (GET) Inter-Public High basketball tournament played at the University of Mindanao Matina gymnasium.

Anchored by the pair of James Belulo and Jonathan Bajao, Bernardo Carpio National High outscored Davao City National High, 29-15 in the third canto after all were tied at the half at 45-all. Belulo scored 12 of his game high 26 points in the third while Bajao added 10 of his 22-point total on that crucial run to come up on top, 74-60. The pair again ignited in the fourth with BCNH on its biggest lead 83-67 and never looked back with less than three minutes to play.

Belulo who engineered BCNH’s open court plays and was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the finals, also got help from teammates Ramelito Harma and Peter Pansit who finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Other members of BCNH included Andrie Ngoho, Francis Ningwa, Vincent Pantonial, Juderick Bellingan, Benjamin Camanda, Billy Ebero, Jezreel Iman, Justin Batillo and headcoach Jonathan Robledo.

Davao City National High settled for the runner-up honors led by Keith Realino and Daniel Villanueva who finished with 18 and 15 points, on a losing effort.

Governor Vincent Duterte National High School placed third after beating surprise final four qualifier Tugbok National High, 89-80. GVDNH was led by Shann Paolo Yangwas who finished with 24 points while John Michael Mahilum added 14.

Tugbok NHS’s Adrian Ramirez wound-up with 18 markers.

GET Inter-Public High tournament chairman Willie Torres along with tournament coordinators Fritz Tan, Jinggo Camomot and Roy Geonzon and tournament commissioner Oca Salvador awarded the winners with their respective trophies during the awarding rites after the games.

The month-long tournament was under the supervision of the SBP-XI chapter.
