Avila’s wife waiting to fill council post

CITY Administrator Melchor Quitain has filled up the leadership vacuum in the city council by officially recommending Lorie Trinidad Avila as  the replacement for the late councilor Leonardo Avila III.

In an interview, Quitain said the city government has helped facilitate the recommendation of Mrs. Avila for her husband’s elected post.

Avila III passed away due to complications from diabetes late December.

Ms. Avila already filed her certificate of candidacy at the Commission on Elections last week. A certifiate of nomination and acceptance was then given to her from the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

Quitain said there was no guarantee that the replacement would be done within the remaining days of the 17th City Council.

“But we remain hopeful,” Quitain said.

Quitain said the council seat is still available since there are six months left until the next administration is sworn in.

Earlier, Vice Mayor Paolo Z. Duterte said the city council is still functional even with the absence of the post left by Councilor Avila’s passing.

However, Duterte said there was a need to formally name Councilor Avila’s replacement since the salaries of his staff are already delayed because of the vacancy in the post.

Merilo Limbaro, city director for the Department of Interior and Local Government, said they will forward their recommendation to Malacanang.

The certification from Malacanang is required before Avila can assume her post at the council, according to the DILG.

In a MindaNews story, Ms. Avila vowed to continue the environmental and child protection advocacies of her husband if she gets elected as a councilor for the first district.

Avila met with her staff to conduct a strategic planning for the campaign period which will start on March 25.

She said that she is hoping to get the same warm support that her husband Leo received from the Dabawenyos.

“Coming from my heart, I decided to run for councilor,” she said. With MindaNews
