Leonila V. Selpa, provincial manager of NFA-Davao City, told TIMES yesterday in an interview that they obtained 8,000 bags from General Santos City, which was delivered last Monday. The new stock will allow the agency to replenish its warehouse which has been empty since April.

“But even with the absence of NFA rice that began in April, there is no rice shortage here in Davao. There are commercial rice traders who were able to import rice,” Selpa said.

She said the supply of rice in the region would also be augmented with an additional of 600,000 bags that would be delivered within next two months, with about 200,000 bags from Vietnam would arrive on Saturday.

The 200,000 bags supply, she said, is part of the 250,000 metric tons of rice that are recently imported by NFA.

The agency’s supply dwindled following the decision of the national government to temporarily halt the importation of rice. The national government’s decision changed when it noted the lack of low-priced rice in the market.

Selpa said the supply problem, however, spurred the prices of commercial rice up to P48 a kilo. As a cushion to price increases, she said the national government launched “Tulong sa Bayan,” which tapped establishments to sell commercial rice at P39 per kilo.

With the program, service outlets were established on April 30 in 26 establishments in the city. Among those include the service outlets in Bangoy St., Calinan, Agdao, Toril, Monteverde, Sobrecarey, and Sta. Ana Ave.

The “Tulong sa Bayan” is a joint program of the Office of the President, the Confederation of Grains Retailers Association of the Philippines, Inc., the Philippine Confederation of Grains Associations and NFA.

Selpa said the program discouraged hoarding of the good as each consumer is only allowed to buy three kilos a day. “But if a consumer is part of a marginalized sector, he or she can obtain up to five kilos of rice in the service outlets,” she said.

As of June 18, Selpa said a total of 2,174 bags of good quality commercial rice were sold in the service outlets that are part of the program. Despite the arrival of NFA stocks, she said there is no announcement yet from the head office to halt the implementation of the program. (KMF)

In a statement released on Monday, the chamber said DATE, which is on its 20th year, will be held from September 20 to 22 as the event will highlight the golden crops.

“This year’s trade expo focuses generally on the golden crops, which includes cacao, coffee, coconut, corn, cassava, rice, banana and bamboo with a theme: Better Agri for everyJuan,” DCCCII said.

The expo, the local chamber said, will have exhibitors from agri-trade, agri-industrial equipment, fertilizers, crop science and disease management of the crops.

The last time that the DCCCII highlighted the golden crops was in 2013 and 2016. In 2013 alone, data from DCCCII showed that the trade expo was joined by 63 exhibitors, mostly those into cacao, coconut, corn, coffee and cassava, with 8,000 visitors.

The 20th DATE is in partnership with the city government, Department of Agriculture and Department of Trade and Industry.

DATE is an annual gathering of the region’s leading industries and different stakeholders. It also serves as a venue to bring together global and national agricultural experts that will provide ideas, best practices, updates on agricultural standards and networks that will contribute to region’s livestock, hogs, poultry, and aquaculture industries.

Last year, the DCCCII highlighted the hogs, poultry, livestock, game fowl and aquaculture industries. It was conducted on September 21-23 last year at SMX Davao Convention Center. (KMF)

Traffic rerouting dry-run in Talomo starts on Wednesday http://mindanaotimes.net/traffic-rerouting-dry-run-in-talomo-starts-on-wednesday/ http://mindanaotimes.net/traffic-rerouting-dry-run-in-talomo-starts-on-wednesday/#comments Mon, 18 Jun 2018 12:49:33 +0000 http://mindanaotimes.net/?p=59122 Read more ›]]> The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) XI is set to conduct a 68-hour traffic rerouting test run in Ulas as the Talomo Bridge I will be closed starting 4 a.m. tomorrow until 11:59 p.m. on Friday.

“Talomo Bridge I will be closed to traffic for the DPWH dry-run and inspection of the Talomo Bridge II,” cited the traffic advisory from the city government released on 4 p.m. Monday.

With the closure, the city government announced that there would be a one-way traffic scheme in Ulas area. The re-routing scheme would be implemented by the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO).

Outbound vehicles from downtown should use the Talomo-Puan Bypass Road while the inbound vehicles from Ulas should use the Talomo Bridge I, the city government said.

The test run, DPWH XI said in a separate advisory, is for the implementation of the Talomo Bridge II widening project.

In a report of the Philippine Information Agency XI, “the road-widening was originally to be implemented in 2016, however, road-right-of-way problems stalled the project’s detour bridge. The opening of the Diversion Road extension in late 2017 provided the DPWH-XI an alternate road for rerouted traffic.”

Survey: Local investors bullish http://mindanaotimes.net/survey-local-investors-bullish/ http://mindanaotimes.net/survey-local-investors-bullish/#comments Mon, 18 Jun 2018 12:28:21 +0000 http://mindanaotimes.net/?p=59142 Read more ›]]> Businesses in the Davao Region remained bullish on the economy with the establishment of infrastructure projects and expected rise in tourist arrivals during the upcoming Kadayawan Festival, the recent survey of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) bared.

In the Business Expectations Survey (BES) of BSP conducted on April 2-May 22, the results bared that enterprises in the region continued to have positive outlook along with the businesses based in Region IX. The sentiment of the firms was similar for the second quarter.

“(The firms’) outlook improved due to expected commencement of new projects (mostly construction), improved weather forecast and influx of tourists during Kadayawan Festival in August (in Region XI),” the results of the central bank’s BES showed.

The BSP surveyed 104 firms that are in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Top 7,000 Corporations in 2010 and Business World’s Top 1,000 Corporations in 2015
The sentiment of the firms in Davao Region was different during the first quarter, based on the results of the survey.

BSP’s survey cited that the establishments in the region were less buoyant last first quarter “on account of the expected slack in demand after Christmas.” There were also those who raised concerns on the implementation of TRAIN, which started in January.

The BES bared that the outlook of the firms in other regions in the country, however, was less buoyant on the economy in the third quarter as they expected to have interruption of business activities during rainy season, lower consumer demand and high commodity prices.

Throughout the country, the BSP surveyed 1,466 companies. Overall, the businesses had positive outlook for the second quarter with expected increase in demand and establishment of infrastructure projects under the “Build, Build, Build” program of the national government.

The results of the BES bared that there was only a “slight dent on optimism caused by expectations of higher consumer prices due to oil price hikes and peso depreciation.”

Except Regions IX and XI, the sentiment of the businesses for the third quarter was less positive with the expected interruption of business activities in rainy season, low consumer demand and high commodity prices. (KMF)

(DCCCII) signed a sisterhood agreement with a Malaysia-based business organization last week to bolster ties and trade exchanges.

DCCCII president Arturo M. Milan told the TIMES that they signed the pact with Sarawak Business Federation (SBF), an organization based in Malaysia, on June 11 at the chamber’s office in J.P. Laurel Ave.

“The sisterhood agreement aims to establish a closer collaboration between two business organizations in promoting trade and investments in the Davao Region and Sarawak, Malaysia,” Milan said.

In its website, the SBF said it is a joint federation of business organizations in Sarawak such as Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak, The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak, Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association.

SBF also includes Sarawak Oil Palm Plantation Owners Association, Sarawak Electrical Association, Persatuan Pengimport dan Peniaga Kenderaan Melayu Malaysia, Sarawak Entrepreneur Association, Kuching Computer Business Association and Sarawak e-Commerce Association.

“The signing of the sisterhood agreement is very timely as Davao is promoting investments in agriculture, manufacturing and tourism while Sarawak is very strong in palm oil, cocoa and timber products,” Milan said.

Milan said SBF also expressed support to send delegation to the Davao Trade Expo by September. He said the DCCCII is also invited to join the Sarawak International Business Expo in October.

The sisterhood agreement between DCCCII and SBF is also expected to complement the direct connectivity from the city to Kuala Lumpur. The air connectivity is serviced by AirAsia, an airline company that headquartered in Malaysia.

Agency: Region 11 registers positive trade balance in Q1 http://mindanaotimes.net/agency-region-11-registers-positive-trade-balance-in-q1/ http://mindanaotimes.net/agency-region-11-registers-positive-trade-balance-in-q1/#comments Fri, 15 Jun 2018 14:23:23 +0000 http://mindanaotimes.net/?p=59001 Read more ›]]> With the improvement of outflow and inflow of goods, Davao Region’s trade balance in the first quarter posted positive at P616.30 million compared with the figure during the same period a year ago, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) bared.

Data from PSA showed that the region’s trade balance improved from registering a negative performance in the first quarter last year at P649.70 million. This was based on the outflow and inflow of commodities.

As of the first quarter, Davao Region along with other eight regions in the country registered positive trade balances. The frontrunner was Eastern Visayas with a trade balance of P16.55 billion followed by National Capital Region at P12.60 billion.

The other regions with favorable trade balance as of the January to March are Central Luzon with P8.68 billion, Central Visayas with P4.25 billion, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao at P1.48 billion, Western Visayas with P1.31 billion, Soccsksargen with P1.20 billion and Bicol Region with P207.65 million.

The trade balance, PSA said in a statement, is the difference between outflow and inflow.

“Outflow refers to the total value of commodities which goes out of the specified region or province while Inflow refers to the total value of commodities coming in the specified region,” PSA said.

The data on the outflow and inflow of commodities are carved on the domestic trade statistics compiled by the agency. The agency defined commodity flow or domestic trade statistics as a compilation of data on commodities carried through air, rail, and water transport systems in the country.

“Data on the inflow and outflow of commodities in the different regions of the country are used to construct inter-regional and inter-industry relation tables,” PSA said. (KMF)

Francisco Mauricio, president of Hirna Mobility Solutions Inc., told the TIMES in an interview that they would expand in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro within this month, where they tapped the taxi operator associations in those areas.

In Iligan City, however, taxicabs do not have meters.

“We will also expand in Bacolod and Ilo-Ilo this month. We will likewise be in Cebu and Bohol by July and Baguio City by August,” Mauricio said.

The company’s expansion, he said, prompted after noting its success in Davao City, where their taxi-hailing mobile application was already installed in 4,100 taxi units.

“We have now a strong foothold in Davao,” Mauricio said, as they partnered with Metro Davao Taxi Operators Association (Medatoa), whose members are 140 taxi companies with about 4,000 taxi units. There are about 5,600 taxi units in the city.

Hirna Mobility Solutions Inc. started to its commercial operations in the first quarter this year. It was accredited on April 18 by Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Its local mobile application was first developed by Avis Global and Avis Philippines with the assistance of Medatoa.

Mauricio, also the president and chief executive officer of Avis Philippines, said they decided to start in the city when it noted the demand of the mobile application tailored-fit for the taxi operators association.

The mobile application, he said, was also supported by the city government. He said they assured to their clients that they would not impose a booking fee for the passengers, which means that the consumers have to only pay the same regular taxi rate.

As Medatoa availed the services of the company, Lawyer Rogelio Largo, chair of Medatoa, said the taxi operators pay P5 to Hirna Mobility Solutions Inc. per complete booking. He said the booking fee is not passed on to the driver or passenger.

“As of now, about 75% of Davao taxis have signed up with Hirna. We expect to increase that to as high as 90%,” Largo said. (KMF)
