Davao City celebrates 8th beef sharing festival http://mindanaotimes.net/davao-city-celebrates-8th-beef-sharing-festival/ http://mindanaotimes.net/davao-city-celebrates-8th-beef-sharing-festival/#comments Thu, 23 Aug 2018 01:56:09 +0000 http://mindanaotimes.net/?p=61289 ]]> The Turkish people on Tuesday celebrated the Feast of Sacrifice known as Kurban Bayram, in commemoration of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his only son Isaac, at the Rizal Park.

During the festival, cows were slaughtered and its meat shared with the poor.
The ICAD Foundation, in cooperation with the city government, celebrated the 8th beef sharing festival last Tuesday at the Rizal Park. People from all over Davao gathered there to take part in the festivities, discover and taste Turkish delicacies, and learn to make peace with other cultures.
On that day, people also received two kilos of beef each for free.
According to Mustafa Gun, one of the organizers and head coordinator of the event, the festival was inspired by the story of Abraham’s act of faith.
He believed that God’s people should also learn to have an act of sacrifice for others. This is also one way for the foundation to share their blessings for the people of Davao who embraced them.
Zeynep Tulip Gun, the wife of Mustafa Gun, said it’s also an opportunity for them to share the rich Turkish culture.
“It is our eighth year of celebrating this festival in Davao. We are really glad that we are able to share our blessings here in the community and I wish that we can continue to do these things in the years to come,” she said.

Floods hit city http://mindanaotimes.net/floods-hit-city/ http://mindanaotimes.net/floods-hit-city/#comments Wed, 30 May 2018 01:37:50 +0000 http://mindanaotimes.net/?p=58338 ]]> Altered waterways cause floods in 2nd district

WATERWAYS altered by some business establishments have been pointed as the contributory factor in the floods that hit several barangays in the second district of the city, an official of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Office (CDRRMO) says.Following heavy rain that started late Monday night until early Tuesday morning, residents in some villages of the city’s north areas experienced waist-deep floods water.

CDRRMO Operations Officer Rodrigo Bustillo said a subdivision and a cemetery in Panacan have modified the waterways in the areas.

“The canal should be 15 by 20 meters,” Bustillo said. “But the subdivision in Malagamot altered it to just two diameters.”

Bustillo said Forest Lake Memorial Parks also modified the waterways.

“Due to the modification of the waterways, the conveyance capacity of the canal became smaller,” Bustillo said. “And since the waterways are now smaller, expect the rain water to flood the houses.”

The TIMES tried to reach the administration of the Forest Lake Memorial Parks but the employee who answered the phone call refused to comment due to lack of authority.

As of 6 p.m., records from the CDRRMO showed that at least 600 families were affected by the floods that hit the barangays of Buhangin, Communal, Barangay Lanang (Belisario Heights), and Panacan (Malagamot).

At least 200 families affected in Don Ramon Village, Pizarro Village, and Doña Mercedez Village in

Panacan were evacuated to the barangay hall.

Disaster responders from Central 911 together with Task Force Davao rescued at least 25 individuals, mostly children, in Barangay Panacan during the flood.

Street floodings were also reported La Verna, Buhangin and lower portions of Belisario Heights.

Members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) were also deployed to assist the flood victims.

CDRRMO said all the river systems were within the safe levels, and all the bridges in the second district were all passable.

Bustillo said they are validation the damages, although no major damage on infrastructure was reported.

Flood waters subsided starting 8 a.m. yesterday as rains also stopped.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration reported that the heavy downpour was caused by Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting Mindanao and Palawan.

Proposed township to have a school, say top officials http://mindanaotimes.net/proposed-township-to-have-a-school-say-top-officials/ http://mindanaotimes.net/proposed-township-to-have-a-school-say-top-officials/#comments Tue, 29 May 2018 02:40:50 +0000 http://mindanaotimes.net/?p=58305 ]]> A SCHOOL and a property developer have joined forces in the setting up of a modern township which will have a school that will start operations in June 2019.Officials of the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) and the Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI) yesterday signed a memorandum of agreement at Seda ABreeza Hotel for the 22.2-hectare LPU Town Davao, a development which will have a university and commercial components.

“This would be one of the most exciting projects of an educational institution not just in Mindanao, particularly in Davao, but all over the Philippines where we really try to integrate a school in a big commercial area,” said Laurel who represented the school in the signing.

Based on the agreement, the project, located at the Sun City Road in Buhangin, will have a 17-hectare mixed use development for residential, commercial, hotel and convention components; and a 5.2-part where the campus – including its academic resource center, dormitories, pool, maritime center, and a football field – will be set up.

Jose R. Soberano III, CLI chair and chief executive officer, said the land development for the project would cost about P300 million as it will be landscaped fully, will have an underground power system for lesser visible aerial wires in the campus, and an environment-friendly sewage treatment plant that removes contaminants from the wastewater.

Part of the project will be a condominium tower, which will have a budget of P1 billion, that will serve as a housing option for the students.

Laurel said the estimated cost for setting up two buildings on the school campus is about P1 billion.

LPU Town Davao will offer courses like Medical Technology, Pharmacy, Accountancy, Accounting Management, Business Administration, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Tourism, Information Technology, Industrial Engineering, and Civil Engineering. Different Senior High School strands will also be provided.

The university will also release its tuition rates next month as it will also announce available scholarships in September.
