Radio Gaga is a song by the rock band Queen. Song analysts say it was a 1984 commentary on television taking over radio’s popularity and the advent of music video as an important medium for promoting records. In the past, one would listen to radio for comedy, drama, or science fiction program.

Roberta Flack

Radio music is still relevant – in spite of Spotify and other music services on the Internet because of radio’s capacity to bring local flavor.

Those who enjoy old music listen to RETRO 95.5 in Davao City because many of the songs there bring back memories when going gaga over radio was common.

Let’s take a look at one of the great pop songs from the past century.

Don McLean

Don McLean

KILLING ME SOFTLY WITH HIS SONG

Killing Me Softly with His Song is a song composed by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel – in collaboration with Lori Lieberman. Lori recorded the song late in 1971. Roberta Flack’s version became a number one hit in the US and Canada in 1973.

According to Lori Lieberman, the song was born of a poem she wrote after experiencing a strong reaction to the Don McLean Song Empty Chairs.

Don McLean said he didn’t know the song described him and, when asked about it, said he was absolutely amazed and humbled by the whole thing.

LYRICS

I heard he sang a good song

I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him
And listen for a while
And there he was this young boy
A stranger to my eyes

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I felt all flushed with fever
Embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish
But he just kept right on

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

He sang as if he knew me
In all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me
As if I wasn’t there
And he just kept on singing
Singing clear and strong

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

Faustina Sofia Castro, Josh Sexcion, and Joseph John Gonzales won Team Awards: 2nd Place in the 2018 Academic Bowl of Asia – Junior Varsity Division and Quarter Finalist in the International History Bowl 2018 Asian Championship – Junior Division.

Individually, Josh Ahiezer Sexcion bagged 1st place in the International History Open Bee Asian Championship – Junior Division and Joseph John Gonzales entered the semi-finals in the International History Bee 2018 Asian Championship – Junior Varsity Division.

The IHBB 2018 Asian Championships took place at JW Marriot Lak Resort and Spa, Khao Lak, Khuk Kak, Thailand.

The International History Bee and Bowl (IHBB) are history quiz competitions for individual students and school teams outside the United States. Within the United States, students compete in the comparable National History Bee and Bowl; the same organization, International Academic Competitions, oversees the International and National (i.e. American) tournaments. The International History Bee and Bowl debuted in the 2011-2012 school year in Europe and Asia.

The International History Bee and Bowl test knowledge of all aspects of history in a buzzer-based competition format, which bears a resemblance to some television quiz shows. However, unlike on a quiz show most IHBB questions are paragraph-length, and move from harder to easier information. When students think they know the answer, they ring in with the buzzer. If they are correct, they, or their team members get points, if incorrect, then the other students (in the History Bee) or the other team (in the History Bowl) has an opportunity to hear the rest of the question. All IHBB matches are conducted in English – tournaments in other languages may be added at some point in the future. (Wikipedia)

Last March 3, 2018, Faustina Sofia Castro, Josh Sexcion and Joseph John Gonzales competed in the International History Bee and Bowl – Philippine Regionals at La Salle Greenhills. They won as champion in the Junior Division Category of the Quiz Bowl along with another PSHS-SMC Grade 9 scholar, Cyrus Mari Lopez. This qualified them to join in the Asian Division in Thailand and in the History Olympiad in Berlin Germany. In the said competition, Cyrus also bagged the second place in the Quiz Bee, Junior Varsity Division. While Faustina Sofia Castro and Joseph John Gonzales got in the semi-final rounds.

During the said competition, the Varsity Division of the PSHS-SMC composed of Timothy John Najarro and Cyro Defensor also won as champion in the Quiz Bowl. Both also qualified in the Asian Division in Thailand and in the History Olympiad in Berlin Germany, though they were not able to join.

Their coach, Miss Krishna Mie C. Zabate, accompanied the team. Miss Zabate is a faculty of the Social Science Unit of PSHS-SMC.

Probably the most popular destination there is Paradise Island Beach Resort as the owners keep making the place as clean and interesting as possible. People also go to Pearl Farm for more upscale amenities and services. These two top tourist spots have successfully been enjoying top-of-mind awareness among travelers for decades.

IGACOS is made of Samal Island and the smaller Talikud Island in the Davao Gulf. There are other smaller islands in the area. Many divers explore the waters near those islets – like Ligid Gamay (small) and Ligid Dako (big). Most “Island Hopping” boats wait for customers at Sta. Ana wharf – near Magsaysay Park; others serve from the Marina Wharf along Lanang Beach Club – near the Waterfront Insular Hotel at the north side of the city.

During summer and in December, the island hopping business is at its peak because of the influx of foreigners and tourists from different parts of the country. The lean season compels the tour operators to rest on weekdays.

To entertain guests from Norway (said to be the happiest place on Earth – according to a 20 March 2017 United Nations Agency report on BBC News), the Pilay family of Toril and their friends took the Marina Wharf route to Ligid Islands for a sightseeing adventure on and under the water last Saturday, 30 June 2018. It was a smooth 90-minute morning boat ride to the first stop.

Marine biologist wannabe Selina Pilay and friends communed with underwater creatures – along with dive masters East Pardillo of Scuba Diving International and Ivan of Carabao Dive Center. The rest swam on shallow waters, hitched on a jet ski, and had a picnic on the boat.

Off to Ligid Islands at around eight in the morning

The trip back to Marina Wharf at around four in the afternoon was like a small rollercoaster ride because of the current that was stronger than in the morning.

The Ligid Islands adventure was a great way to bond with family and friends. It was also an eye-opening experience to learn that rubbish or flotsam still exists in some coastal areas.

Thanks to Ging and Bok Pilay for the ride.

Freeze | Diabetes Awareness http://mindanaotimes.net/freeze-diabetes-awareness/ http://mindanaotimes.net/freeze-diabetes-awareness/#comments Mon, 25 Jun 2018 23:59:06 +0000 http://mindanaotimes.net/?p=59510 ]]> The United Nations has passed a resolution designating November 14 as World Diabetes Day. November 14 marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, the man who co-discovered insulin in 1922, alongside Charles Best.

The occasion is to raise awareness of diabetes, its prevention, complications, and care needed by those afflicted by the disease. With millions of people affected by diabetes, November 14 should not be the only day for people to be aware of it.

Diabetes is a chronic condition associated with abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that lowers blood glucose. Absence or insufficient production of insulin, or an inability of the body to properly use insulin causes diabetes.

More than 100 million U.S. adults are now living with diabetes or prediabetes, according to a report released on July 18, 2017, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The report finds that as of 2015, 30.3 million Americans – 9.4 percent of the U.S. population – have diabetes.

In the Philippines, at least six million Filipinos have been diagnosed with diabetes. Dr. Augusto Litonjua, president of the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation, warned that this figure could double to 12 million or even more by 2040 because of undiagnosed diabetes cases

According to a report on Inquirer.net, Litonjua cited employees working in the call center and the business process outsourcing industry, who work at night and are asleep during the day, as vulnerable. The endocrinologist explained that this reverse habit fractures the body’s diurnal rhythm or the body’s sleep-wake cycles, which causes the body to suffer a lot of stress. He warned that stress is one of the factors that precipitate diabetes miletus.

Shawn Stevenson, bestselling Sleep Smarter author and creator of The Model Health Show, has been the importance of sleep for staying in shape. He explains why sleep is more important than diet during his guest appearance on Tom Bilyeu’s YouTube channel

Sleep may be more important than diet, according to Shawn Stevenson

Sleep may be more important than diet, according to Shawn Stevenson

The common idea on what causes diabetes is excessive sugar intake. But genetics, stress, and a sedentary lifestyle may also contribute to the condition.

The human body needs sugar – or foods that get converted into sugar – to function. Sugar comes naturally from fruits, plant juices, some root vegetables, cane sugar, honey, and galactose from milk and yogurt. All eaten carbohydrates become glucose during digestion.

Excessive intake of sugary drinks and food may lead to disease

Excessive intake of sugary drinks and food may lead to disease

Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are added to foods and beverages when they are processed. Regular soft drinks, energy drinks, and sports drinks are major food and beverage sources of added sugars. The American Heart Association recommends no more than six teaspoons (25 grams) of added sugar per day for women and nine teaspoons (38 grams) for men. Children should be eating a lot less added sugar than adults (between three to six teaspoons) depending on age and caloric needs. The average American has been said to consume 19.5 teaspoons (82 grams) of added sugar every day.

Filipinos also consume a lot of sugar. According to FAOSTAT (Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database), sugar consumption per capita reached 19.3 kg in 2013 in the Philippines – with an all time high of 26.6 kg in 1996 and an all time low of 11.4 kg in 1962.

According to www.webmd.com, common warnings signs of diabetes include:

  • Increased thirst.
  • Increased hunger (especially after eating)
  • Dry mouth.
  • Frequent urination or urine infections.
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue (weak, tired feeling)
  • Blurred vision.
  • Headaches

Consulting a doctor, proper diet, sleep, and exercise are prudent steps to take in the fight against diabetes. Practically all organs of the body can be damaged by diabetes.

Pardon the cliché “cool, calm, and collected” but Tito Boy did exude a relaxed aura like a Jedi master of sort throughout the event. After an audio-visual presentation of the new school, Tito Boy’s video was shown to give the audience a rare glimpse of the Datu Bago awardee’s mind. The millennial terms “lodi, werpa, and petmalu” apply to describe his personality. He advised young designers not to follow what he has done but work on their own concepts and focus to prove their worth.

Students dressed up like flight attendants – along with mother and daughter tandem Joji Ilagan Bian and Nicole Hao Bian – led the guests to a tour of IMS facilities. They showed a mock airplane, airport, wine tasting room, and other spectacular things to train the students well to hit the ground running after graduation. Each color schemed floor offers something unique – including Alfonso Guino-o’s ethnic-inspired clothes and jewelry at the fourth floor.

The external resistance can be dumbbells, kettle bell, rubber exercise tubing, your own body weight or any other object that causes the muscles to contract. Expected results from resistance training are increase in strength, muscle tone, mass, and endurance.

ALEX started building muscles when he was 16 years old

Alexander “Alex” Fucanan Dalhog Jr. has been going through several types of training and life’s challenges to become a stronger person. In his own words:

“My name is Alexander Fucanan Dalhog Jr. Son of Alexander Aguado Dalhog Sr. and Fe Fucanan Dalhog, 5’8” in height and 84 kgs. in weight. I am the youngest among three siblings in our family. My mother is a full time mom. My father was an OFW in Riyadh Conference Palace as a bar captain but he died due to aneurysm 6 years ago when I was still in high school. Mom suffered a severe heart failure and was in a hospital for 3 months at that time. Maybe that was also among the reasons why my dad died as he wasn’t able to cope with all the pressure that was happening to our family. In my high school years I was not the best student who achieved a lot in academics but I was one of the national players in Arnis/Escrima. I won a gold medal for Davao City in a competition held in Zamboanga City in 2011. People say that the best memories were in high school days but I say it’s not true for everyone because I was not able to graduate on time due to financial constraints. I was one of those who benefited from the Drop out Reduction Program in Davao City National High School by studying at home while taking care of my Mom. I eventually graduated in summer. I knew it already during the graduation ceremony that I could not go to college since my dad passed away and no one would provide for our expenses in school. Even my siblings did not proceed to get higher education because of our financial problem. So I decided to take a big step and overcome obstacles. I worked and – at the same time – study at University of Mindanao. I enrolled in Business Administration Major in Human Resources Management because I heard that UM offers a flexible time schedule that is best and suitable for working students. I worked at McDonalds as Marketing Staff for 1 year and moved to Bibo Company where I taught English to Japanese Students online for 1 year. Then I moved to Pizza Hut and worked as Back of the House Dough Master and Pizza Maker and as well as Front Of The House Marketing and Server at the same time… I always believe that you should never stop learning and you have to take risks to be the best version of yourself. And nothing is impossible with hard work, passion, commitment, respect, and discipline. I dream of becoming a teacher at the University of Mindanao or to become a lawyer.”

His modeling career started when he was hired in an event as brand ambassador for Lactum. Alex also got hired as brand ambassador for Grab during a Kadayawan event. HiLeap Pro Sportswear by Marico Ventures International recently hired him as brand ambassador.

THE MUSEUM at the foot of Mt. Hamiguitan in Sitio Tumalite, Barangay La Union, San Isidro, Davao Oriental

On a three-hour trip from Davao City to Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, the plant lovers would pass by a sign along the highway pointing to the Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to the pygmy forest where Mother Nature does its job to produce bonsai plants without human intervention. Stoked by the idea of ogling at bonsai plants and the possibility of bringing home a few, the newbie gardeners decided see the sanctuary.

Alas! The pygmy forest is not easily accessible because getting there requires an eight-hour trek and a special permit from the local government to explore. By virtue of Republic Act No. 9303, the site has been declared on July 30, 2004, as protected area under the category of wildlife sanctuary and Mt. Hamiguitan’s peripheral areas as buffer zone.

The Mt. Hamiguitan range occupies the land area within the political boundaries of San Isidro, Governor Generoso, and Mati. The wildlife sanctuary is one of the six UNESCO world heritage sites in the Philippines and the only one in Mindanao. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed it in 2014 as a world heritage site for its pygmy forest of century-old trees growing in unique soil that hosts a rich biodiversity of endangered endemic and rare species of flora and fauna. One of its residents is the Philippine Eagle.

World-class cosmetic products, HiLeap Pro sports apparel, and other items shall be introduced to an RSVP audience of about 70 persons to start gaining support from the locals. Young Davao models will strut their stuff on the catwalk.

The marketing team aims to promote the products online and in brick and mortar outlets worldwide.
