Ateneo gets first win in Escandor Cup 2018

Ateneo de Davao University eked out a 90-86 win over Emar Human Environmental College which opened the Escandor Cup 2018 basketball tournament, yesterday at the Davao City Recreation Center.
The pair of Isaac Go and JC Adona led the Blue Knights with 17 points each to spearhead its initial win as both channeled the Jess Evangelio/Enzo Nitorreda-coach squad to a 53-39 lead at the half and never looked back.
Emar could only come up close in the last two minutes of play when they ignited a 12-4 run to cut the lead, 80-85 but came up short of an all the way rally when Adona drilled a crucial triple on the right wing for an 88-80 breather with 1:24 remaining.
The Blue Knights also got help from its wards having Miguel Castillo, Alfred Nicolas, Jeffler Trasmil, Alfonso Labao, Lance Carr, Jed delos Santos, Andre Nebria and Paolo Antonio.
Emar Human Environmental College under coach Jun Montalban paraded its cast anchored by Gabriel Dolormente, James Malazarte, Joven Lapriza, Dexter Tabocanon, Jason Loceo, Sam Homol, Jason Estepa, Ryan Evangelista, Kevin Baste, Derron Cameros and Marvin Alejano.
No less than Presidential Adviser on Sports and SBP-XI Director Glenn Y. Escandor welcomed the teams in grand rites highlighting the traditional ceremonial toss joined by SBP-XI operations head Ronel Leuterio and SBP-XI commissioner Atty. Francis Calatrava.
Other teams seeing action in the 17 year-old and under age group competition are Agro Industrial Foundation, Holy Cross College of Sasa, Rizal Memorial Colleges, Philippine Women’s College, Ford Academy of the Arts, Bernardo Carpio National High School, Sakya, Jose Maria Colleges, Davao City National High School, San Pedro College, St. Mary’s School of Tagum, Davao Jones Academy, Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High, Holy Child College of Davao, Nikkei Jin Kai International School and Cor Jesu College of Tagum.
Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School also made their presence felt on opening day winning the best muse award.
The champion team will represent the city in the coming Breakdown Basketball Championships to be held sometime this year in Manila.
