Astorga to turn into an ecozone

THE AGRICULTURAL barangay of Astorga in Sta. Cruz town, Davao del Sur, will turn into an industrial park as endorsed by the Regional Development Council.

Ma. Belenda Q. Ambi, chair of RDC XI’s economic development committee and regional director of Department of Trade and Industry XI, said the project, Astorga Business and Industrial Park, will rise from a  400 hectare-property at Sitio Sibulan in Brgy. Astorga.

“The proposed initial development will cover an area of 108.89 hectares for the establishment of an industrial area, common utility area, seaport facilities, commercial service support and roads,” Ambi said.

This is a project of Astorga Business and Industrial Park Corp., which is fit especially for manufacturing companies.

In 2014, the municipal government of Sta. Cruz approved the establishment of the project as it could help boost economic activity in the municipality. The property where the project will be situated was also reclassified to accommodate the development.

Elmer H. San Pascual, promotions and public relations group manager of Philippine Economic Zone Authority, said the Astorga Business and Industrial Park is being developed to become as economic zone.

An economic zone, San Pascual said, is an area where investors can avail of income tax holidays up to eight years depending on the project, special five percent tax on gross  income, zero value-added tax rate on all local purchases including telecommunications, power and water bills and exemption from payment of local government taxes and fees.
