Alleged NPAs face criminal charges

FOUR members of the New People’s Army (NPA), including an alleged high ranking official, faced criminal charges before the City Prosecution Office last Wednesday evening following their arrest in a random police and military checkpoint in Calinan District on Tuesday.

Sued are Joel Quano alias Christopher C. Rollon, Ranie Sacares Ninal, Mike B. Capito, and Alexander A. Bartolome. They were charged for violation of Republic Act 9516 otherwise known as the Illegal Possession of Explosives.

The legal council of the respondents from the Public Attorney’s Office, on the same day, filed an Urgent Motion to Dismiss and to release the respondents.

The four are now temporarily held at the detention facility of Davao City Police Office while Prosecutor Victoriano Bello Jr. is resolving their case.

Based on police reports, the respondents were arrested at a checkpoint manned by 10th Military Intelligence Battalion,1003rd Infantry Brigade, 69th Infantry Battalion, 84th IB, Task Force Davao, Intelligence Service of AFP (ISAFP) and the Calinan Police Precinct. A .45 caliber pistol, two fragmentation grenades, cell phones, subversive documents and personal belongings were recovered from their possession.

The three motorcycles used by the four suspected New People’s Army were also impounded.

Meanwhile, the warrant of arrest for the crime of robbery and attempted murder filed before the Regional Trial Court 11, Branch 16 against Quano was also served.

It was earlier reported by the military that Quano, alleged leader of Pulang Bagani Command 1 in Southern Mindanao Regional Command (SMRC), was Kumander Parago’s replacement.
