76 vehicles impounded

At least 76 vehicles were impounded by the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) following orders from President Rodrigo Duterte to clear the Diversion Road from illegally parked vehicles.

Speaking on Wednesday’s AFP-PNP press briefing, Sr. Insp. Pedro Campomanes, the HPG intelligence chief, said the figure is expected to increase as the operation continues.

Campomanes said most of the vehicles impounded were cargo trucks.

President Duterte, during his speech on the inauguration of the widened Davao River Bridge on May 25, directed the Highway Patrol Group to clear the C.P. Garcia Highway, popularly known as Diversion Road, from illegally parked vehicles.

But despite Duterte’s order, some drivers are still parking along the Diversion Road, which stretches for 18.3 kilometers from Ulas to Panacan.

Campomanes said those vehicles that parked due to engine malfunction are not exempted as these will also be towed.

Chief Insp Milgrace Driz, spokesperson of Police Regional Office XI, said there are already “No Parking” signages along Diversion Road.

Driz said these were installed when she was the chief of the Buhangin Police Precinct in 2016. Driz’s former police unit covers the norther portion of the highway.

She said that any act that hampers the flow of traffic is considered a traffic distraction, and it is a violation.

PRO XI director Chief Supt Manuel Gaerlan also directed the concerned police precincts to conduct road clearing, Driz said.

The police, Driz added, should help drivers of those vehicles that are in trouble along the highway. Most of the cargo trucks passing the highway are coming or bound for nearby provinces.
