7 out of 8 slain rebels claimed

SEVEN out of eight rebels killed in the series of encounters last week in Laak, Compostela Valley were already claimed by their relatives.

The Laak encounters between the Philippine Army’s 25th Infantry Battalion and 60th Infantry Battalion and the New People Army on the morning of July 12 left nine bodies – eight rebels and one soldier.

Seven cadavers – including three females and two minors – were already identified and claimed by their relatives.

Laak Mayor Antonio Libuangan assured to assist the families of the slain rebels.

The local government unit has already shouldered the funeral expenses of the four who were from Laak.

Those from other municipalities were turned over to their respective LGUs.

Based on the police investigation, it was found out that at least two of the slain NPAs were involved in murder.

Troopers of the Army’s 28th Infantry Battalion recovered high powered firearm, explosive and other documents belonging to NPA members after an encounter in Lupon, Davao Oriental at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday.

 Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, 28th IB commander, said the government troopers encountered 40 rebels belonging to of NPA’s Section Committee 18 and Pulang Bagani Command (PBC) 6, led by Ka Do in Sitio Kirantik, Barangay Marayag.

 The 20-minute encounter resulted to the recovery of one m14, one improvised explosive devise (IED) Capto type,  one M14 magazine, four AK 47 magazines, 50 blasting caps, one rifle grenade, 50 meters wire, 100 meter wire, personal belongings, medical paraphernalia, and subversive document with high intelligence value.

 Zagala said the troopers acted on information received from the community that the NPAs were gathering in the hinterlands of Marayag to conduct atrocities against government forces.

 “The encounter is a manifestation of the community support to the AFP in order to build resilient communities free from the destructive influence of the NPA,” he said.

 Zagala also said the strength of the community, through the AFP community support program in Davao Oriental, prevented the NPA to conduct atrocities and endanger the lives of peace loving citizens of Davao Oriental.
