3 cops dirty?

PNP hotline tags officers as ‘protector’ of arrested brgy. councilor
THREE PNP personnel are being investigated by the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) after they were accused of being the protector of a barangay councilor arrested Sunday during a drug buy-bust.

Speaking in yesterday’s AFP-PNP press briefing held at Royal Mandaya hotel, Sr. Insp. Maria Teresita Gaspan, spokesperson of the DCPO, said the three policemen assigned to the Buhangin Police Precinct.

Gaspan said they received a text message from the Isumbong mo kay CD text hotline tipping about the three cops, whose names are withheld pending the results of the investigation, as protecting Arnold Maalat, also former barangay captain of Communal in Buhangin District.

The DCPO is intensifying the campaign to cleanse the ranks of corrupt and dirty personnel.

“We just do not believe in hearsay,” he said. “It must be accompanied by evidence. They must secure evidence or point it out that the allegation is true.”

“There will be an investigation report so whatever the result is, we will base on it if they will be (charged),” she added. “As of now, we cannot relieve them yet as the investigation is still ongoing.”

The Investigation and Detection Management Branch (IDMB) is currently conducting further investigation of the report.

Antonio Rivera, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency XI director, said they are monitoring other barangay councilors and some former policemen and soldiers who are into the illegal trade.

“There are some (government workers). I can’t tell the particular places (where they are assigned),” Rivera said

Rivera said the elected officials that they have monitored are only at the barangay level.

On Monday, the PDEA filed drug and gun charge against Maalat.

The PDEA arrested Maalat in a buy-bust operation conducted at the said barangay around 9 a.m. on Sunday.
