291 kids rescued through Kean Gabriel hotline: data

THE KEAN Gabriel hotline for child abuse has already rescued 291 children from January to September this year.

Speaking in yesterday’s I-speak forum held at the City Engineers office conference room, Juenalyn Pablo, the social work associate of Kean Gabriel Hotline, said for the month of September alone, they already recorded 38 cases with the kids’ ages ranging between 3 and 8 years old.

The hotline was launched last Oct. 28 after the death of Kean Gabriel who was stuffed by his stepfather in a rice sack and threw him against the bamboo floor of their house in Km. 8, Barangay Matina Pangi in Talomo District.

Pablo said most of the reports are physical abuse, and are mostly concentrated in Bucana, Barangay 76-A.

“Most of the rescued children came from low income status,” she added.

She said they have already filed six cases in the court against the parents and aunts or other relatives of the abused children.

A couple who was among the six facing child abuse charges is currently detained in Sta. Ana Police Precinct. “We had pulled out their five children were they have been neglected,” she said.

Health workers evaluated the kids and two of them were found to be severely malnourished and they are now under the care of a non-government organization. The rest were turned over to their relatives.

Based on their records, August was the busiest month with 46 children rescued. This was followed by June and September with 38 each, July with 36, January with 34, April with 24, March with 21 and February with 20.

They also recorded three cases outside of the city.

She also urged the public to be more responsible with dialing the hotline because they consider every call an emergency. They installed caller IDs to trace calls.

In April, authorities have complained that they are receiving an average of 30 prank calls per day.

Crystal Mae Econ, social worker assigned at the Kean Gabriel Hotline, said that out of around 4,500 calls they received for the last five months, only 155 cases were legitimate.

The Kean Gabriel Hotline is 0908-8184-444. (With reports from Ma. Cecilia Badian)
