24th So Kim Cheng Sports Awards: Tan gets third Female Athlete of the Year honors

Atsuko Kaiyel Tan will get her third straight Female Athlete of the Year award when the annual So Kim Cheng Sports Awards reels off its 24th edition this July 22 at the Royal Mandaya Hotel.So Kim Cheng Foundation representative John Irene Del Campo bared the news yesterday during the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the SM City Davao. She was joined by Davao City Sports Council Incorporated official Jerson Tamayo.

According to Del Campo, the eight year-old AAK (Association for the Advancement of Karatedo) karateka of Davao Christian High was a unanimous choice for the Female Athlete of the Year award after winning a silver medal in the 7th Vietnam Open Karate for the girls 6-8 year-old Kata held in Hanoi, Vietnam and another silver finish in the 10th Kota Kinabalu Open Championships in Malaysia. She also bagged two gold medals during the 6th Adidas International Karate Cup held at the SM Mall of Asia and 2018 SM Milo Super Karate Kids National Age Group Championships at the SM Seaside in Cebu City.

“She was chosen to become this year’s Female Athlete of the Year for those exceptional feats in her international and national competitions and not only that award but she will also be joining the Hall of Famers for the city’s longest running sports award,” Del Campo said.

Tan was the youngest recipient of the award when she first received it back in 2016 at the age of six.

Her teammate Ian Carlos Pascual will receive the Male Athlete of the Year honors after reaping gold medals in the 10th Kota Kinabalu Open Karate Championships held in Malaysia and during the 6th Adidas International Open Karate Cup at the SM Mall of Asia.

Tamayo, on the other hand, said 17 other promising athletes from the 27 different National Sports Association (NSA) will also receive special citations on that night.
