21 farmers, groups given recognition for contribution to region’s economy

THE DEPARTMENT of Agriculture (DA) has awarded last Friday 21 farmers and organizations for excelling in agriculture.

“(This) is a recognition for our farmers and fisherfolks who contributed to the economic development of the region and the whole country as well,” Remelyn R. Recoter, regional director of DA XI, said during the awarding ceremony at The Ritz Hotel.

The awardees were named as “Gawad Saka and Agri-Pinoy Rice Achievers” for this year.

Recoter said this is an annual activity that provides recognition to those who excelled in the field of agriculture. It is also supported by the department’s attached agencies Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and Philippine Coconut Authority.

Winners of individual category are granted with P30,000 each as cash prize while the organizations garnered P50,000.

In the statement of DA, “the institutionalization of Gawad Saka in Region 11 has given the local government units’ greater roles and responsibilities in carrying out Gawad Saka in their areas of governance.”

The program has been implemented for 39 years now.

Under group category, for instance, the winners are A.O. Floirendo Rural Improvement Club, Mr. and Mrs. Eliseo D. Mallorca, Laak Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Carmen Barangay Food Terminal, Katipunan Small Farmers Cooperative BFT, PAFC Davao Oriental, MAFC Banaybanay and CFARMC Panabo City.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said in his written message that they would continuously pour support for farmers and fisherfolks if one “adopts modern technologies and practices sustainable farming and farm mechanization to increase their production and income.”

“Our Gawad Saka awardees serve as our model and inspiration in enhancing research and dissemination of modern technologies and in extending more support to our farmers and fishers,” Alcala said.
