Talomo stickup ends in Toril shootout

TWO SUSPECTED motorcycle-riding robbers were killed in a shootout with police in Barangay Toril Proper, Toril District Saturday noon in an incident that started in Barangay Bago Gallera, Talomo District nine hours earlier.Chief Insp. Ronald Lao, the commander of Talomo police precinct, identified one of the fatalities as Cris Tamboboy. Police are still establishing the identity of the other unidentified body.

Lao said that at around 3 a.m. on Saturday, a stickup happened on Libby Road, at the corner of Newtown Village, in Barangay Bago Gallera, Talomo District, victimizing local residents Dioriza Jane Baquial and Raymund Olano Baquial.

Three armed men, at gunpoint, robbed the couple of their Apple IPAD worth P30,000 and Samsung cellular phone worth P6,000. The suspects then escaped towards Toril on board a black Honda Wave.

The Talomo Police Precinct, immediately upon receiving the report, conducted a hot pursuit operation.

As the suspects fled to Toril, Lao said they coordinated with the Toril Police Station led by Chief Inspector Jerome De Guzman.

In the joint operation, they spotted two of the three suspects in Purok 6, Bayanihan, Barangay Toril Proper at around 12:10 p.m.

The police tried to accost the suspects, but the two opened fire.

The arresting officers were forced to return fire, Lao said.

Both suspects were hit and sustained wounds in the different parts of their bodies.

Lao said the two were immediately rushed the two to St. John Hospital and later transferred to Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).

However, they were declared dead on arrival by the attending physician, a certain Dr. Araneta.

Lao said they recovered a .45 caliber pistol and three pieces sachets of suspected shabu in the possession of Tamboboy, and a .38 caliber revolver and two pieces of sachet of suspected shabu for the still unidentified companion.

The stolen items owned by the victims were likewise recovered from the fallen suspects.

Lao said the robbery victims “positively identified” the suspects.

Tamboboy was identified through a rogues’ gallery. It was revealed that he was arrested on June 25, 2017 for another theft.

Police said Tamboboy and his gang were tagged behind the series of robberies in Talomo and Toril since last year.

The third suspect is still at large.
