2 mining firms paid P29-M in ‘14: report

TWO mining companies in the region paid a total of P29.050 million worth of local taxes as of 2014, the 3rd report of the Philippine Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (PH-EITI) bared.

In the data of PH-EITI, the figures were the local taxes paid by Apex Mining Co., Inc. and Philippine Mining Development Corp. that operate in Maco, Compostela Valley.

The report showed that Apex Mining paid P26.787 million for local business tax and P2.169 million for real property tax. Apex’s total local taxes paid increased from about P21 million in 2013.

The data showed that the government-run Philippine Mining Development Corp., meanwhile, only paid P93, 072 for real property tax as of 2014. There was no data on the payments made by the corporation in 2013, based on PH-EITI’s 2nd country report.

Niño Raymond B. Alvina, executive director of Bureau of Local Government Finance under Department of Finance (DOF), said yesterday in PH-EITI’s Roadshow at Marco Polo Davao Hotel that they are pushing for timely submission of accurate data on revenues.

“We are recommending to DOF that those who fail to submit reports in quarterly basis shall be sanctioned,” Alvina said.

Lawyer Ronald Rex S. Recidoro, member of PH-EITI multi-stakeholder group and vice president for legal and policy of Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, said they are also proposing that the revenues share would be directly remitted to the local government units (LGUs).

“In that way, LGUs will directly get the share and know how much would they get from the national wealth,” Recidoro said.

As of 2014, the PH-EITI showed that the region’s share in national wealth, specifically the provincial government of Compostela Valley, amounted to P417,320 from mining taxes. The local government of Maco gained a share of P938,971, basing on the data from Department of Budget and Management.

The figures, however, were different from the data of local government unit where Maco only obtained P1.283 million as share in national wealth as of 2014.
